Hi,

We've just got a 172 for the lady to run about in. Had it a week, and its been great- approx 500 miles done, no problems.

This morning at 6.15am, got a call to say car was stuttering and misfiring, so I took the 328 out to swap over.

RAC turned up, diagnosed misfire, and took top cover off the engine. 2 of the leads were taped with insulating tape. Fault was cleared (cel went out) and I drove it home.

Its still stuttering badly- I've had the inlet off, and cleaned up the plug end of the leads etc in-case there was any water in there from me jet washing the engine.

However, that's brought no success, and I'm at a loss as to what to do?

Looking like swapping in new leads and coil pack would be next port of call, but from where?

thanks!

Could be a number of known electrical issues, are you on cliosport.net? Well worth it if you're not.
My number 3 spark plug tube fills up with oil from a leaking rocket cover gasket, this causes a minor misfire we think.
Crank position sensor, Dirty throttle body, coil pack or something else common I can't remember, sorry!

Cheers!

I reckon first approach is to get a new set of leads and get the inlet off, sparks out and cleaned up. then clean out the holes and fit the new leads..

That way it can go back together, and if coil needs changed thats a more simple job.

How easy is the crank position sensor to get to?

It's highly likely to be an injector fault. Common as muck on these.

Its just that it appeared after jetwashing the engine bay that makes me think its spark related..

On a related note- how can I find out if I have a F4r 130/132 or 136?

Having fun trying to order plug leads- or are they all the same?

I'm told Renaults like crank sensors, but if the HT leads are taped up then replacing them would be my first port of call.

Thats the approach I'm taking- just trying to order the things!

Burd is trying to find the engine code first, but I cant see if there's any difference between the codes in regards to plug leads?

does anyone know?

Ah OK I should read things more carefully before piping up. I'd check the coil pack in that case they seem to have a habit of developing a small crack and if water gets in them causing problems.

May be worth replacing them with Magnecour leads while you're doing it.

NGK PFR6E-10 are the correct plugs for the 1*2.

Your issue is more than likely caused by jet washing, so id do sparks, plugs & coilpack first.

The latter two can be picked up for 9/10 of f'all on Cliosport 2nd hand.

cheers for the suggestion!

I've read about the sparks- they're an expensive plug (my old m20 ones are £2 each!) but get good reviews.

I'm going to have the inlet off and ECU cdisconnected and checked for water tonight.

Getting plug leads/coil pack is the next plan-either via cliosport or t'ebay

Right, had a bit more time to try to sort this tonight..

Took the inlet manifold off and did the following:

took leads out and cleaned down the spark plug holes. No3 gave plenty water up.

Cleaned and dried all the spark plug leads

Put it back together, no change

Found that the ecu was missing half the dust cover, so took off the connector and cleaned with contact cleaner.

no change.

Battery was disconnected whilst working on ECU, at re start idle was very lumpy, with pops and no fixed rpm.

Taking it for a short drive gave better response at higher (above 2k) revs, and the EML coming on, then off.

what do folks think?

on another note- really struggling to find out what engine code is in the car so I can order plug leads?

All 2nd hand units on Ebay are just listed as 172- no engine code variants. from this do I take that the leads are the same for all versions?

Right, quick update:
Joined cliosport, and got in touch with their tame dealer.

He confirmed the following:

Car as an F4R732 fitted

ALL Plug leads and coil packs are the same on 172/182 engine codes. same part numbers throughout.

so 2nd hand set+ coilpack ordered off ebay- will fit them when they arrive.

In the meantime it'll be spark plug cleaning and checking the injectors

I'd try the new leads and cool pack before messing about with anything else tbh.

Will do, but will be a couple of days before they arrive.

Getting the sparks out would let me know what cyl is affected, although, like the cricket and the tennis- rain stops play here just now

Got the plugs out today, 1&4 were rubbish, so hit all 4 with the wire brush and refitted.

Started the car up,immediately bettersmile

After a 5 mile run,it's running well!
Cheers for all the help, think I'm still going to fit another set of leads and some new plugs as preventive maintenance
Happy does not begin to cover it!
