How much is too much?
Discussion
Just laid out £700 on my GTI6 and it needs about the same over the next year to be in really good shape. I can do some things myself but my living arrangements don't really allow for the car to be up on stands for days on end while I tinker with it.
Thing is, it now owes me two and a half bags and I'll struggle to get 1.5 if I sell....

£700 isn't a lot
i only refreshed all the suspension on my rallye, and it came to over £1200.
you can do it on the cheap, but you'll only fork out more often.
i rebuild axles for 306s, and always use genuine parts. they sell for £450. i even fit them for extra fee.
what sort of work needs doing to your car?

It does seem a pain to be shelling out to repair parts, but at least once they are repaired or replaced at least you know they are good for a while. If you were to sell the car, unless you bought a brand new car to replace it you wouldn't know what parts would need replacing on the replacement car.
As I see it, if you think you are going to keep the car for a long time then keep repairing it and enjoying it, otherwise run it into the ground or sell it for whatever you can get for it.
I'm lucky I've never had to pay out too much for repairs in my old pugs, when I have had major problems I have tied it in with planned modifications like upgrading the engine.

I think with cars at this end of the "value" market, you need to ask not "what it's worth", but "what's it worth to you"?
I have a Saxo VTS with some fairly choice mods, that I could reuse on another 10sax if I wanted. I'm probably in it for around £3k including original purchase price of the car, and on a good day it's probably worth £700.
I'd be hard pushed to find something as fun and cheap to modify for the money though, it's worth £3k all day long to me!

I'm in a similar situation with my VTS at the moment as well - looks like the bottom end went after I did a track day earlier in the year, so I parked it up & put it aside to make a decision to keep or strip, etc.I have a Saxo VTS with some fairly choice mods, that I could reuse on another 10sax if I wanted. Every time I go to strip the good bits off to sell them & then move the car on as a rolling shell / project for someone else, I remind myself of what I've already spent on the car (mainly on the rear beam rebuild about 18 months ago). It's all very well and good selling it but i'll still have to replace it with another car, as a backup to my 205, and seeing as the replacement car would also have to get bought on a budget, chances are that would also need £££ spending on it.
At which point I go back to my original thoughts of thinking I may as well just source a known working engine from another VTS / 106 GTI being broken & swap it over to get mine back on the road. Just a shame that every time I decide it's time to do it, I end up spending the £££ on my 205 instead
agreed there, the Lemforder parts are better than the OEM Citroen Saxo VTS drop links, the threaded bolt you put through the suspension strut and secure with a nut has an internal hex so you can hold it still and use a ring spanner to tighten it, where as the OEM parts you have to attempt to clamp, or get a windy gun on.
Still seem fine after 7k of hard abuse as well.

Taking it back in today tomorrow, no idea what parts were used, but the work was done by a reasonably well known local (Leicester) indy French car specialist who posts on here...the mech I spoke to when I saw what had happened said "they're a nightmare" so it's not unusual by the sound of things.

Oh dear, I hope it's not the one in Leicester that is well known in Pug circles for being dodgy as hell?Edited by Pothole on Thursday 4th July 09:11
