Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a full fat Clio 182 and I'm wondering how 'fussy' I need to be and in particular whether I should only look for a car with a FSH. From what I've read so far the main thing to look out is that the belts have been changed, but also wondering if I should hold out for one with a new exhaust and upgraded mounts.

It will be very much a weekend car doing either motorway miles or hard driving. I'm probably looking to spend c.3.5 k and for me wanting a tidy one is as much about wanting it to be hassle free as saving my bank account. Although being such an enthusiast's car and a relatively old one by now, is the idea of a 'tidy' one a bit too optimistic?

Any thoughts/help much appreciated.

For that money then yes you want FSH as £3.5k should get you a minter. Under £2k it gets less important for me personally as i just wanna see reciepts for belts and then buy the car on condition.

Check the gearbox too - try a fast change from 2nd into 3rd - should be no crunch or snick from the 3rd gear syncro (its usually the first to go).

As exgtt says £3.5k will get you a minter and Cliosport is the best place, although most ads are replicated here on PH. You aren't being overly optimistic either, most people on CS are very particular and fussy and it shouldn't be long before you find a lovely example.

On the service history front, yes absolutely get one with a good history and as said look for the belts (cambelt and aux belt) being changed on time which is 5 years. The 1*2s are GREAT cars but only if you good one that's been well cared for. If you get a nail it can be costly!

For £3000+ I'd be expecting to see the best cars around.

Having said that, you might well pick one up that has been perfectly well cared for by someone looking for a quick sale for less than that. Price doesn't necessarily equal quality.

My 2p: go and see the ones near you (I'm sure there must be at least a couple if you're not in the sticks) and buy on condition and indication of care smile
