206 GTI or 206 GTI 180
Discussion
..well Mrs Bezza's 205 GTI may be sold soon after 10 years, simply because it needs a bit of TLC and we aren't do it yourself type car people, so we are wondering if it might not be time for a more modern motor with less of the compromises you get with an old 205 (I.e, no PAS, no air-con, bloody loud at speed since the exhaust was replaced...!)
Keeping the sporting hatchback theme, she likes the Fiesta ST, but these are quite expensive. On the other hand I've noticed how cheap 206 GTIs are. Never rated by the motoring press I know, but surely they ain't that bad and but I've seen a 50K mile 206 GTI 180 locally for just 2 grand, so any feedback please on what the 206 GTi and 180 are like to own. Are they any good?

Just to mention, the Fiesta ST, while a great little car, has unfortunately become the victim of thieves the past few years as people steal the bumpers, spoilers and side skirts to put them onto other Fiestas. Had it happen to mine and it was a nightmare.
Unless it's going to be garaged or you live out of the way, I'd avoid for that reason!

If you get one, you are already used to the rattles from the dash.
I know of a few people who had them, drove one of them insane!!
To be fair not bad cars just rattle and squeak. (Brother has one)
Me I am restoring the 205 at the moment.
unless something major wrong with the 205 I would keep it myself.

I had a 206 GTi... and tbh I thought it was a bargain when I paid just over £2,500 for it years ago. However you need to be careful with them as quite a high number have a problem where the engine will randomly cut out. Totally ignored by Peugeot (it came on Watchdog but they did nothing)
Mine had this which eventually led me to sell it as it was quite dangerous, would cut out down the motorway or going round roundabouts mainly. There's been lots of research into this problem but there is no fix.

Tell him I sent you.
I've owned my GTi 138 for 3 years now and I'm a fan. Can be picked up for very little. Mine seems to be built very well, no sqweaks or rattles.
Watch out for rattling exhaust manifolds but other than that drivetrain is under stressed and reliable. Lots for toys as standard and pulls around 4k a an 85mph cruise so not too loud.
Go for a 180 if you want something quick out the box or a 138 if you want to fettle.

The wife has had a 138 GTI for nearly 4 years now, only issue being an abs sensor and the air con packed in last summer..
Done routine maintenance, timing belt/water pump and clutch kit.. it just keeps going. Now on 64k. Really happy with it.
It's not a great hot hatch but as a car it's ok.. Compared to the 180, I'd like to have the seats but that's it. I much prefer the look for the 138 - specially the wheels and costs are lower. The 180 has a very expensive 2nd cat amongst other things.
I plan to get rid of ours at some point this year and will probably replace it with a 207 GT

I had a 172 Cup years back and it was a lot better car really..
At the time of buying our 138 a 172 wasn't an option as having ESP was a priority.. The later 172 with ESP and any 182 weren't in budget at the time.
206 is slightly bigger which was a bonus, has a lot nicer dash, and IMO looks better on the outside. That's about it though'!
