Found this rather alarming situation when changing my wheels around earlier...

...rear pads appear to be missing whatever holds them in, and thus one is trying to exit ship!

Have ordered new pads and a fitting kit, will that include all the bits i need to rectify the situation.

As well as the retaining springs there is a locking bar missing. Its just a small L shaped rod held in place by a clip. What`s the bet the last person to fit the pads left the little clip out?
By the way they are the same brakes as in the topic here about 205GTi,306XS rear brakes,so that`s another to the list of cars with the same Bendix rear calipers.

Just thought, be careful winding back the caliper piston and make sure the notch in the pad locates in the groove in the piston when fitting the new one.

Used to be able to do that change with a hammer and a decent sized flat-head screwdriver biggrin Hammer and driver to tap the bar in, screwdriver also to wind the piston back in by slotting the flat head in the notch on the piston.

As said, missing the bar and a fitting kit should have it. More important than the springs as it stops the pads escaping!

Other cars with those calipers include but are not limited to:

306 XSI, HDI, XS, GTI-6 and 1.8/2.0 petrols
Clio 172/182/Trophy.

They're rubbish. Seize solid and don't work properly when they aren't stuck on/off. Still, got the art of strip down and re-build down to about an hour a side over the years including taking the wheel off.

I had the rear pads come completely out on my Renault 5 turbo which had the same or very similar rear calipers.

As others have said should have a l shaped bar and pin.

Couple of other things to note:

1 - In that photo the pads may be the wrong way round (i.e. outer pad is inner and vise versa). See the little 'nipple' cast into the backing of the outer pad? That's meant to sit in the groove in the piston to stop it rotating. Sometimes the outer pads have 2 threaded holes instead so they can be screwed to the carrier, but it looks like your carriers dont have the holes.

2 - The 2 'ledges' on the carrier that the pads sit/slide on are not equal width. Put the L shaped retaining bar against the narrower one, this leaves a bit for the anti rattle springs to seat against on the wider one.
