I own an early 106XSi with a 1.6 engine. The chassis plate says "Group N Homologation" so I'd assume it's part of a limited run?

I bought it in '96 from the original supplying dealer, with about 2,000 miles on the clock. Ran it for a few years. Then when I got a company car, gave it to MrsGuinness as a run about. Unfortunatley when our first half of guinness came along we traded it in and lost it for a few years.

When the half was old enough to climb in and out of a car again, MrsGuinness wanted a new car and we spent months going round garages but there was nothing that took her fancy.

In the end, in despair I asked what she really wanted. She said her old car back. So I looked on ebay, and there it was. Our old 106. Quick bid and I bought it.

So that Saturday we drove down to Derby and picked it up. Turns out he'd been a student up here and bought it from the dealer we'd chopped it into a few years before.

Brought the car home and took all the lexus lights, chavvy wheels and tat off it and restored it to almost original spec. Mrs Guinness then used it for a few more years, until we had another half of Guinness.

So rather than chop it in against another family mobile, it went into storage. Where it sat for a few years.

Long story but it's now back home. Bodywork looks OK, wheels could do with a refurb.

However the real issue seems to be the engine. I think it has a head gasket failure. There is mayo in the rad.

So I have two options, take the engine out, get it fixed, replace the cooling system / rad. Or swap in a later 16v engine.

I sort of love the grunty low down torque of the 1.6 8v, but sort of feel that spending money on it wouldn't make the car better?

Is the later 16v engine miles better?

Car isn't used at the moment, so it would be a third / fourth choice car, for high days and track days only. No daily driver issues.

There is a huge chasm of in performance between the 8v and 16v engines.

This Group N Homologation on the chassis plate intrigues me,I`ve never seen that on a Peugeot,do you know more? If it is a limited run model or has some special features I would keep it original.
Yes,the 16V 106 is a cracking little car and goes like the clappers.Fitting that engine in yours needs lots of mods, wireing harness and ECU,cooling etc etc, lots of work.
Oil in the cooling system is very common with the 8V TU due to head gasket failure. This engine has to be the simplest to remove and refit a head, easy job,few hours work.

Hmm, having never driven the 1.6 8v i don't really know.. However i owned a Saxo VTS and 106 GTi with the 16v 'JP4' engine, of which i still rate very highly to this day, both of which were very strong and made circa 130-140bhp on reputable RR's!

Anyway, i'd maybe look into a rebuild to retain the XSi 'charisma' anyone can drop a 16v unit in!

Got any pictures? I like the XSi's!
