From what I've read I understand the 1989 (G) and 1990 (H) are most desirable as these have the later dashboard after very early cars and are non-cat examples. What about power steering - more desirable with/without? Colours? Red and miami blue?

Your right about a pre-cat model,PAS?? its nice to have as they are heavy in town and parking. Its a lot of clutter under the bonnet and takes a bit out of the BHP`s.
Which ever you choose make sure the spec`is standard and never been altered or messed about with.
Unmolested GTi`s are rare and going up in value all the time.

The most desirable spec is the 1FM model of which 25 were made and around 18 exist. Leather, black/anthracite wheels, aircon, pas and a different stereo - there is more too.
There are the limited edition g/h 1.6/1.9 miami blue / sorrento green examples with leather / black carpet too.
Again there is more detail but I'm typing this on my phone. Lots of info here

Pas is or non once it's up to speed I've preferred non, but then mines not a daily.
G/h are the better built cars, later ones rot and the paint jobs aren't brilliant.

I'd say anything 1989-1991 and standard. I've an F-reg 'phase 1.5' 1.6. It's non-cat, later dashboard but BE1 lift-up reverse gearbox. No power steering which has great feel, and apart from parking it's no bother. 14 inch wheels, cherry red, sunroof. Having a sunroof helps on hot summer days as you can get a fair bit of heat from the exhaust tunnel on a spirited drive. It's remarkable rust resistant, returns 35mpg and is just brilliant to drive. Still on its original exhaust which I find amazing after 24 years!!

May be biased, but this is my ideal spec.

167 bhp gti-6 engine, xsi 5spd box, miami blue, G plate with absolutely no rust/rot, mintest interior I've ever seen and graphite grey wheels.

I love it, not letting go of it ever smile

Nice ^^ but someone's had the original full leather out of that and left you with the earlier seats!

Yes the full leather was shagged so he bought the best set of standard ph1.5 seats he could find

Mine has both sun roof and power steering and I wouldn't do without either of them. It's a special edition in Sorrento, 1.6.

Great fun.

Mine's the same colour & spec but a 1.9

The power steering wasn't a requirement when I was looking but having driven a few with and without i'm glad mine has it (mainly for parking) - The sunroof was a must have, this car is going to come into it's own on a sunny spring day on a B-road with the sunroof wide open.

Don't know whether it's me but the later cars tend to have more tin worm issues?

I have a Miami blue one as above with a gti6 engine, when It's out its great fun.

I would want a none sunroof as they can leak and look quite clunky now.

I would not want leather either as I like the red centred seats.

I have a k plated steel grey 1 of 300 in that colour.....factory standard inside (Sorrento green interior as per ltd edition run), factory outside and then gti 6 lump.

Pas (still has feel and not that light) plus sunroof but no abs or air.

I also have a wide bodied t16 kitted car running full Cosworth YBengine and 4x4 running gear, very similar to the red Dimma above. That has not got a sunroof, has power steering and has abs as per Cossie.

I would look on auto trader and choose what you like best.. if in good nick it will start to increase in value..

currently got two - one red one I am scrapping and breaking for parts which is a rough rusty 1.6 and had a GTi6 engine

and the other is a cat c but as a result it appears to have lived indoors for a while and is rust free so ideal for my use on track with gti6 engine from the red one and now a cage to fit too smile

Spec is less important than condition, history and provenance on these now.

It's usually suggested the G/H plates have the better condition shells.

As for desirable, depends on what you're after. 1FM, Turbo Technics, Dimma are my favourites. I think a good condition 205 1.9 with solid history has to be the one to go for. Just like the one i sold earlier this year unfortunately.

The later models (K,L) seem to command good money too.
