Got in the car yesterday, started to pull off the drive when noticed a grinding/rubbing noise, also noticed there was resistance when accelerating, like the brake was sticking.

When I turn the wheel, a bad knocking sound appears from the offside front corner, which does not sound healthy, so reversed it back into the drive and walked to work.

The knocking is much worse when some steering lock is applied.

Not had a chance to get it jacked up yet to take a proper look, but suspect it may be driveshaft/CV joint failure.

Any suggestions/ideas as to what it may be?

Thanks in advance

not sure on the grinding/stuck brakes, but knocking on lock is almost certain a CV joint dead

Thanks, thought so.

The actual brakes are fine, but there is more resistance when pulling away, only slightly though, guess it's the broken CV joint creating extra friction.

Guess it's time to get the spanners out rolleyes

Don't bother trying to replace the CV joint alone, just replace the whole shaft. Be careful though, there are two types which changed over around '00/'01.

Aye, that's the plan, found a place that sells refurbished ones for about £50 each on an exchange basis, either that or £100 for new from ECP.

Thank's for the heads up, I assumed the newer type part was applicable to the Mk2 (which I have, 2001, Y reg), anyone able to confirm?

Not all mk2s have the later shaft. Most do, but not all. Crucially, it's possible to get them round the wrong way too> They'll physically fit, but eat wheel bearings! The difference is the depth of the splines in relation to the thread depth. Compare old with new and you shouldn't go wrong.

Oh, and get yourself an 11mm ratchet spanner if it's the offside one you're changing. You'll know why when the time comes smile

Well I finally got it up on the axle stands, and had a proper look, it's not the CV joint after all, that's fine, the spring has failed, sheared in two.

The spring has fallen down and was rubbing/jammed against the wheel, creating the 'extra friction' I mentioned.

Got the parts ordered, so will be rebuilding the strut this weekend.

Yup both sides, going to replace the drop links, track rod ends and ball joints while I'm at it too. Still waiting for the parts to be delivered though.

Good for you that will make it feel better.Just one thing, take the top mounts apart and make sure the bearings are nice, clean and thoroughly greased.
