Peugeot HDi cut out won't restart

Peugeot Expert 90,000m 2.0 Hdi 2010 model, cut out when cruising on the motorway, will run whilst starter is turning but stops when key is released, clouds of diesel smoke.

Showed a dozen random codes, mostly I think due to battery draining whilst waiting for recovery. Cleared codes, now does not throw any up, possibly due to not running long enough. EGR valve is 2 months old and works when tested on Snap on scanner, lift pump is working, no rattling or banging from engine.

Does anyone have a clue,it belongs to a mate who is on holiday abroad, I wouldf like to have it running when he returns.

When you turn on the ignition can you hear the fuel pump pressurise the system and then stop?If not the pump in the tank has failed(sometimes if you whack the tank it makes them start agian).If you can hear it running it is most likely the fuel rail pressure sensor.
