Hi everyone, I've been a complete idiot. My 182 ran out of oil (The Oil light had been flashing, but when I had a looked at the dip stick it appreared to be ok) Either way I've been a fool and should of got it looked at by a proper mechanic (problem with being a 20year old male I suppose!).
Anyway this week it started to make a ticking/knocking sound coming from the top end of the engine bay. I took it into my local mechanic who had a look and told me that it had run out of oil and that the engine was probably knackered, although he was surprised that the noise was coming from the top end of the engine.
Could anyone reccomend what I should do with it now? The car is running fine (except from the very annoying ticking/knocking sound of course). If it needs a rebuild, does anyone have any idea of costs?

Many Thanks in advance,
James

Can you video it? Dephaser pulley can make a ticking sound when knackered, look on youtube for videos to compare it with.

Thanks for your reply. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjYKTXWzbKs&fea...
Sounds similar, but from the videos I've had a look at the ticking noise doesn't seem to get quicker when you rev it.

Ouch. Sounds like a big end gone mate. Pretty much terminal unless you have lots of cash or can rebuild engines. I'd be looking on ebay for a new engine personally

Any idea how much a rebuild would cost? I know it's going to be a lot, but I can't imagine it's worth a lot in it's current state.

Rebuilds can easily run into £1K+

If you're handy with a spanner you can swap an engine on your driveway in a weekend easily, looking on Ebay they aren't too expensive. A good garage could do it in a day.

This company Engine Dynamics, aren't too far from you I don't think. Highly recommended, worth phoning them up to see if what they reckon. I'm sure they would provide either service for you, as well as confirm if it is a big end, because you don't want to trust a stranger off the internet.

Just noticed this, so it looks possible to get a rebuild for under a grand if you only need to bottom end touching.

Not sure if it helps but I use 519 Automotive in Bedford to look after my Clio Trophy, he is a Clio Sport specialist and does not look too far away.

Put a wanted on cliosport someone will be able to help..

It would make a lot of sense to put a new cambelt on whilst its on the bench too. 20 minute job instead of 4/5 hours!

Get a second hand engine and fit. Otherwise you'll need to remove the crank, have that looked at, replace the shells etc.
