On poorly surfaced U.K roads the softer set up has got to be more forgiving, and yet still fun? Does anyone agree?

Not driven one, let me try yours.

On poorly surfaced roads i could imagine it might be better, mine (cup) can skip around a little on bad bad roads.

Depends what you want from the car. If you want the last word in handling then it has to be the Cup suspension every time. I'm sure the non-Cup would be more comfortable - but the Clio is hardly a big wallowing Jag so you might as well go for the Cup pack anyway.

Always a compromise whatever suspension set up you have. A 'normal' clio set up would be better for one road, where the cup would suit another. One thing is for sure that the cup would be faster on a track. The only way is to drive both and see which you prefer.

I have one with non cup suspension and it is still a pretty hard ride on the London roads. Still pin sharp. I think the track is the only place it would ever make a difference. After all , it is only a bit of paint on the callipers and stiffer springs !

Also a quicker steering rack, which makes quite a difference!

I owned a 197 without Cup and I've done 12000 miles in a 200 with Cup pack. The 197 in standard trim has firmer suspension than a standard 200 and for road use it was fine. Not overly firm and comfortable but then once I put it on track I noticed how much the Cup chassis would benefit the drive.
Then a couple of years later I had the 200 with cup pack. It took a little while to adjust to he firm ride but after that initial time, only the bumpiest of road would make me think about it.
The 200 with Cup pack is firmer than a 197 with Cup pack.
I would love to own another 197/200 and I would definitely get one with Cup pack, even though it wouldn't be used for track use. If it were a 197 I would upgrade the suspension to 200 cup spec to be even firmer.
I hope this helps.

Cup chassis sits lower so looks better. Wheels too look better.

I ran KW's on my 200. Wasn't keen on the red calipers and the ride was far too stiff when I test drove one.

I have a FF RS 200 with the Cup pack, which I keep for most of the year in the south of France. It looks better with the Cup pack and lowered suspension and red Brembos, and handles and rides superbly on the French roads - from D routes to Autoroutes, or just burbling through the chic resorts.

However, when I bring it back to the UK, I'm quickly reminded that some of our roads are sub-standard and quite inexcusable - even the M20 is harsh and jittery.

Having said that, the 'Cup pack' maketh the car, so I'd still recommend it. Do however, avoid 18" wheels, and Good Year Eagle F1s are quieter and more compliant than the OE Conti SC3s or 5s.
