182 Trophy vs 197??
Discussion
All,
looking to get into a Clio as a bit of an all rounder...
Would love to have a Trophy but I cant ignore the fact that the 197;s are coming down in price...
Insurance would be exactly the same for em for either car so im after some help on the 'other' costs. I had heard that the 197 is a lot worse on the MPG front, but with 6 gears I dont see how..
Also does anyone know how the servicing costs compare, if we exclude the damper service the trophy reqs.
Thanks

I get better out of the discovery around town!
Is the road tax any cheaper on the newer car?

My 197 F1 is on 21.9 at the moment!
It's an awesome car - you just need to rag it all the time as there is so little torque - but that's half of the fun!
Went from a Trophy (owned from new for 2 years) to a used 197 after a few other cars. The only area the 197 improved upon the Trophy was in the driving position. Other than that it was crap in comparison. Slower, worse on fuel (by a large amount) and a lot less fun.
Ride in the Trophy was pretty stiff - untill you really pushed it down a bumpy, twisty road then it was superb. The trick dampers were in a league of their own on rough roads at speed.
Wish I'd kept the Trophy, was glad to be shot of the 197.

I was in exactly the same situation when we were looking for a car for the Mrs, the Trophy's were still demanding really strong money for a good one so decided to go for the more modern 197 (well, actually we waited and found a red low miles R27 with all the toys).
It's the wife's car but I absolutely love driving it (and I'm a massive German car fan), the only problem is you really have to rev the nuts off it to get it on the boil but I suppose the same could be said for the Trophy as well. Even on the slightly lower R27 cup suspension, I still felt it sat quite high, so ditched the standard springs and put some H&R's on instead. Rides more bouncy now over potholes etc but feels so much more planted on decent roads & corners.
In terms of "which is the most entertaining", I think the Trophy will always come up trumps due to it's size and weight but personally I love the aggressive looks & stance of the 197, and it's obviously more modern car.
Ours had recently hit 5 years old so just had the cambelt done (these NEED doing at either 5 yrs old or 72K miles) so if you looks at 197's of this age, make sure it's either had it done or pencil it down as a 500 quid job.

I wouldn't go soley off what 5 people on here say.
I've been in a Trophy and the interior/fit/finish is pretty shocking - it really doesn't compare to a 197.
They are two very different cars.
As biased as I am towards the Trophy I'd still agree with test driving them both. The one downside for me was the driving position which is much better in the 197. As for fit and finish - didn't think the Trophey was too bad. Didn't rattle and nothing fell off. Both as good/bad as each other tbh. I'd added some bits of alcantara & a retrimmed steering wheel to the Trophy mind, but the plastics are just as st in either imho.Sir_Dave said:
