Pug 307cc - wont rev over 1.5k and revs pulse
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I have got a strange problem with a pug 307cc.
When i got the car it would start and rev no problem but now and then it would not rev above 1.5k. turn it off and start it up again and it would be fine.
Now it wont do it at all.
It starts fine, comes up with engine management fault warning and then wont rev above 1.5k. If you try it will just fluctuate the revs between 1.5 and 1k.
It also sounds as though it is firing on 3 cylinders whci is making me think coil pack issue?
Anyone else got any pointers that might give me a clue?
Oh its a 2006 2ltr if that makes any difference...
Got to admit i think working on the TVR is easier. This pug is just ecus all over the place...!
Cheers
Andy

Is it saying anti-pollution fault? Unfortunately it's a generic fault warning and it'll need the codes reading. Even then it can still be a mystery to what actually is wrong.
When I had the fault, I first got the software updated and upgraded, which worked for a fortnight. Then it got looked at more closely and it turned out to be a cracked manifold. Unfortunately the lamba sensor was impossible to remove without breaking, so that had to be replaced too.

This model had an issue with the engine water temp sensor leaking water into the loom and working its way back to the engine ECU and shorting out. Remove the 3 large plugs that are on the engine ECU which sits behind the N/S headlamp in the fuse compartment and check for water or green coloured corrosion.
Cheers for those replies.
It was saying Anti Pollution and i had the engine warning light on. Now it just says Engine Management System Faulty and there is a warning triangle with an exclamation mark.
I have had the ecu out the car and put on near a radiator as i had heard about the water ingress from coolant temp but that has made no difference. The connectors are bone dry and there is no sign of corrosion.
Really am a bit stumpped...!

Before you go spending money on all sorts of code reads and sensors, please give it an engine flush and the correct grade fully synthetic oil. This engine suffers from the hydraulic tappets clogging up ,usually because of long service intervals and low grade oil being used. This allows the tappets to stay open too long and lets unburnt fuel into the exhaust making the lambda sensor work overtime.Quite often an engine flush and oil change is all they need, however sometimes they need the tappets changing.

i was going to give the car a service and engine oil change as a matter of course. I have only just bought the car.
Having thought about things and recent events i think it will be the temp sensor and water going up the wire. Also having had a look at the OEM sensor i have bought from the Peugeot garage i am not surprised they crack...talk about poor quality..!

Check the crank sensor it is common to have a slight coolant leak from the thermostat housing and it runs down into the sensor plug causing poor running, somtimes its ok from cold and gets worse as it warms up .If it is leaking from the housing just remove it and reseal with silicon sealer, there is no gasket.

Well i have replaced the sensor and that has done nothing. The old one that came out has not got a crack or anything. Next is engine flush and oil change...see if that makes any difference at all.
I will aslo check the crank sensor and see if that is wet or damaged.
It sounds as though it is firing on 3 cylinders as well but if i disconnect the injectors one at a time it the engine stutters so it must be firing on 4. Also when you start it the car revs nicely to 2k then dies off to 1 and tickes over sounding like 3 cylinders and then if you put your foot down it will rev to 1.5k and keep pulsing down to 1k but sounds llike it is firing on all 4...odd..!

There is no way i can go for a steady drive...it wont rev above 1.5k...!
I shall give it a whirl tonight.
Other things i should mention was that it did do it a couple of time but then seemed to clear itself. Car has probably been sat a while. Not sure when last oil change was and it does sound a bit rattly on the top end to the left hand side of the rocker cover.
I was going to take the rocker cover off tonight and have a look.

well i tried the engine flush but it has not made any difference. I have bought a Peugeot Planet kit so i should have that on friday and will be able to connect to the pc and hopefully get some kind of idea whats going on. It has to be something daft.
I will try running the engine for 40 minutes tomorrow again just to make sure...!

Andy,
I used to work at Peugeot about 500 years ago. If ecu coolant contamination is ruled out and the harness/connectors are all ok (307 usual stuff) then I sometimes used to come across this issue on 406 - cat partially blocked. It starts and revs to 2000 rpm until back pressure builds then the engine chokes and won't rev. Take out the cat and see if it revs.

I replaced the sensor and the one i took out was in good condition with no crackes. The connector was bone dry and the ecu plug was also dry so i am confident thats not the issue.

Hi Andy, have you been able to resolve the rev issue?
I have a Peaugeot 607 and is not reving past 2. My mechanic has tried everything, Any suggestions on what to do. I am frustrated.
