205 GTI second time around,,,
Discussion
Just bought a totally standard white 1991 205 GTi 1.6 with 63k miles making it my second one with a gap of 18 years! - typically has poor drivers seat bolster, thin paint and various trim bits not quite fitting properly but plan to get these sorted which is half the fun - my first ever new car was a cherry red G reg one and owned it for about 4 years/90k miles and remember thinking it was the absolute bks! - still looks great and fun to drive but seems really basic now, probably last of an era before safety/added weight and computers really took hold.
Just want to know whats the best 205 pug event to go to this spring/summer?

Hi there, can't help you with that I'm afraid but do you mind me asking what you paid for it? I'm looking for exactly the same one but can't seem to find anything a sensible money. My Mum had many when I was a child and I desperately want one now.
POST SOME PICTURES!!!
Have a look on www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk they have ten GTi`s from £950 to £9000!!??POST SOME PICTURES!!!
only have the one pic as it was late when I got back - will post some more later.
Prices are all over the place - there are really good, totally original 1.9s up for 9k plus and 1.6s up for 5k at dealers - i think 2 - 3k will get a good, original one privately but my brother recently bought a 1.6 with 90k miles, really solid bodywork, not much history for £800 (needs decent interior and some basic engine work etc) which was a great buy - just go and see as many as you can and something will turn up, but i think prices will definitely start moving upwards generally.
I wanted totally original - didn't want MI16/306 gti engine etc - mine just needs replacement drivers seat bolster which turned up today, a few very small bits of bodywork doing and trim to be sorted, but basically its ready to go and have some cheap fun in! -

As long as it drives well and is fairly straight I'm keen. I won't be paying £9000 for one, I'd probably say 2.5 would be my max. Low miles isn't a must either. We're Peugeot main dealers and we've still got loads of bits on the shelf! No panels though.
The trick with buying these now is to check the rot in the chassis legs at the front and bottom of the a-pillar.If that is ok buy it, everything else is repairable easily.
Main dealer parts are vanishing case and some are up by 75% in the last 5/6 years, we're hunting Europe now for some NFP parts.
I bought a lovely low mileage '91 1.6 GTi three years ago, as a 'fun run-around'. I prefer the 1.6 to the 1.9.
Really impressed, and some aspects were truly inspiring. However, other aspects were showing the passage of time, so I went in search of the 'contemporary 205 GTi'.
It's not the Mini Cooper. It's not the Fiat 500 Abarth or Punto. It's not a Ford, Vauxhall, Citroen or VW. It is the Renaultsport Clio 200. Obviously not a budding classic like a 205, but an absolute gem for pocket-rocket fun. Even sublime on the Autoroutes at a steady 130kph. One of my all time favourites (and, like the OP, I have a few 'P' cars).

Thanks for all the recommendations - I will be attending a few peugeot events/Goodwood breakfast club etc and generally using it as often as possible this year.
Geneve - I totally understand your comments - the guy I bought my 1.6 from actually runs a motor sport team that looks after Renault Clio Cup racers for private individuals and he a said a similar thing - in particular, comparing the safety of those original hot hatches to the current models, he said 2 people could easily lift the original Clio bodies when they were delivered from RenaultSport, but the new 200s need 4 people to lift, as all the strength and weight has been added to the shell.
Re buying one - I'm no car expert but did read on one website that the most important thing when buying secondhand is to use your instinct first and foremost - human beings have been developing this skill for thousands of years - then if still unsure get someone who does know what they are looking at. I looked at 4 cars and the one I bought stood out as the one for me.

also on buying one - I personally prefer the 1.6 as it feels like enough power in that very thin body shell and wanted it totally original - you can never be sure how good the workmanship is on a Mi16/309GTi engine conversion and whether the rest of the components are really up to it - IMO of course!
I would try to get phase 2 with 115 bhp - buy privately, no need to go to a dealer - most good cars are cherished by their owners and you can tell that when you chat to them.

looks like a good value one on Gumtree - needs original pepperpot wheels and some paint work but at £600 you would have to have a look..

IMO the 1.6 revved more sweetly than the 1.9.
