Best bet is to visit www.205gtidrivers.com and click on the forum subtab.
The conversion has been done quite a few times and there are a number of threads/posts on there with different suggestions based on use of car, etc

I worked with 205GTi`s all through the 80`s & early 90`s and have seen all the conversions.I always thought why? what`s the point of all that work?
The 1.9 205GTi is a cracking car (so is the 306GTi6)why mess them about? The front end was not designed for a XU10J4 so to do it properly everything needs changing. If Peugeot thought it a good idea they would have produced a 16V 205!
As said,205GTi`s are becoming rare and judging by the photo yours is a nice one.My advice is spend your time and money rebuilding it to show condition.A fully rebuilt XU9J with all the ancillaries in perfect condition is quite quick enough.Perhaps some work on the ECU and move the air flow meter inline would make it a bit better. The important aspect with classics (yes, the 205GTi IS a true classic)keep it all original.Remember the money you spend you may get back? GOOD GTi`s are going up in value all the time.
...The other option is to get a nice 306GTi6? and that is a cracking car!!

Iv been told the mi16 clutch is wrong on another forum most people say its an xsara vts clutch I need but I want to see what other clutches I can use so I can get a paddle clutch at the cheapest price
Also I'd like it if people would stop spamming my post with don't change the engine crap iv had x2 1.9 8v engines in it and had too much problems so am going a newer engine ye I have been toled it's a rare one iv not seen many steel grey 205's with green carpets but all can be changes back easy enough

your one looks like its in great condition - keep it totally original and you will have a great car that is only going to go up in value over next few years - getting more and more difficult to find good original/unmolested 1.9's at sensible prices.
been looking for some time and I have just bought a totally original 1991 1.6 that needs a small amount of work to be done (normal seat repair, tiny bit of bodywork repair, paint fade etc) - personally wouldn't touch anything with engine conversion.

Daryl, I have noticed some really nice already converted cars out there for next to no money. I build kitcars so am not adverse to engine swaps, but if yours is rare you might find someone is willing to pay you top money for it as is and then just go and buy one already done. Just sayin! But I'd love a go in a nice Gti-6 205, I rekon its a great engine choice. Good luck if you go ahead, post some pics up.
I done mine with a vts box and used a vts/gti6 clutch and modified the cable it all works ok, I had the same argument about the conversion when I did mine four years ago, it's your car do as you please, I love mine.
Although a good 1.9 can be sold for silly money with the right bits and condition.
