Hey

Not too far away from me is a 2006 clio 197 for £4k, it looks nice but at this price is it likely to be a thrashed one or is it just their bottom price now? It's got 76,000 miles on it.

Well... they're always going to have been given some stick unless you get one of the few that have been driven below 4krpm all their lives.

Just make sure you look for a good service history (doesn't need to be dealers as they're not great on the whole anyway) and not too many owners. If you get to meet the current owner then you can assess whether it might have been treated badly.

Cars of that milage and age are going very cheap simply because they're the most undesirable of the mark, at that milage it's either due or will be due a cambelt change so check it's been done.

Sounds pretty good, make sure the stamp or ideally receipt for the cambelt is there, seen a lot with the older cars and people selling them as 'cambelt changed' but zero documentation to support it.

Any links to adverts etc. out if interest?

Here you go, sadly can't afford it until January/February but hopefully it won't sell yet so I can go look. hehe

Ah Nimbus, very nice colour. Looks like a good example of one of the early cars and the dealer seems to know what they're listing so providing a test drive goes ok, given the market for the 197's at the moment it seems likely it won't have gone before you want it.

Cool, what do you think would be a fair price for me to ask for my car if I p/x it? I've seen some dealers on autotrader selling the exact same spec and year for £4k with 65000ish on the clock, my car has done half this mileage. I'd really like £3k but doubt I'd get that.

Note sure the weighting of low milage would help a p/x price up by that much, you might be able to effectively get £3k for it though as I'm sure there's a margin for haggling in the price of the Clio.

You can only ask and I don't see him selling the Clio very fast so providing you're not taking the preverbial it just work out.

That car is not a Cup.(as per the advert)

It is a higher spec, but without cup chassis, standard Renaultsport Clio 197

Could be just a basic one with no Cup or spec etc at that money.

I'd want to know that the cambelt was done at somewhere that knows what they're doing.

Look for dodgy gearboxes, bushes on the revoknuckle as it requires new hubs at £250 a side.

I didn't realise they were getting so cheap - my 182 wasn't much less than that in October.

There are some defects on the car. Big fag burn on passenger seat. Scuff on OSR bumper and NSF bumper. But all easily sorted but bear in mind cost so will add additional cost to vehicle. Otherwise on the face of it a good car. I miss my 197 and I'd love another one.

yeah, not sure how much they would move on price for that but could help with haggling.

when i was looking for mine this time last year the cheapest cars were around £5k so a year on, more mileage etc i suppose thats a good price (for buying) and at that mileage the gearbox will either have been replaced or it's a good one.
