182's and motorways
Discussion
Hi guys. Im looking to replace my car soon and seem to have pretty much narrowed it down to a 182. Now I will be doing quite a few motorway miles. What are these cars like to live with on the motorway? Blooming awful? Alright as long as I get one with a standard exhaust? Also what mpg can I expect to get from a 4hour journey at outside lane speeds?
Your wisdom is much appreciated

Not a 182 but a 200 and my method of dealing with motorway journies has become a race to get them over as soon as possible.
You should be able to get up to and nearly 40mpg if you take it fairly steady in a 182 but doing so at 'outside lane' speeds as you put it it's more likely to be low 30's depending on actual speed.
The engine will be spinning pretty fast but looking at your garage that's probably not going to annoy you too much, aftermarket exhausts might be a bit louder but there are so many different ones some may be more tolerable than others and a stock exhaust can be boomy at certain revs too. Try for a stock one maybe but I wouldnt make it a deal breaker.
Have you been out in one at motorway speeds? It's a very subjective thing as to whether you find it tolerable or terrible to be honest.

Ah yes I havnt updated my garage in a while. Had a 3 series and a pulsar since so coming from a heavily modified nissan pulsar Im sure anything would be an improvement! Its the dilemma of I want a fun car as I only drive on weekends but my gf lives 200miles away... obviously its not going to be 3 series standard but I just wanted to make sure it wont be as loud as my nissan or have the same thirst at motorway speeds.
So you say the standard exhaust is quite boomy anyway? Would a miltek be no worse in your opinion?
Is there a different car you guys would reccomend instead if you think a 182 isnt suitable?
<£4000
<80000miles
30+mpg
And im 20 so not too much of an old mans car plz

I'm in a similar situation to you just now - have a 250 mile round trip every fortnight or so and do a 40 mile commute most working days (mostly motorway).
I've still got the original exhaust on my 182, and it's got no induction kit or stuff like that.
Cruising at around 3000 rpm/low 60s mph I get close to 40mpg and the engine noise doesn't bother me.
Cruising at around 4000rpm (80ish, on the Autobahn obv) I'll get around 30mpg, but our 2 lane motorways mean lots of fuel is burnt accelerating back up to cruising speed. The engine noise is noticeable, but it's not an unpleasant noise - so bearable.
In with the HGVs at around 50-55 mph and you can crack 40mpg and I'd go close to saying the car is well mannered at that speed - stick the cruise control on, set the climate control to something comfortable, and listen to your favourite CD at a sensible volume and you could be in a Jaaag if you close your eyes, and if you have a good imagination! (Best not to, though...)
If you're doing a lot of motorway miles, make sure the seating position is comfortable.
It's a bit higher that you might expect. I've got used to it and actually quite like it now, but others don't find it appealling.
A 182 isn't for motorway cruising, but I wouldn't say it's seriously flawed dor that task

I had a 182 with a standard exhaust and it was fine on the motorway, however when the original one became rotton I got a Milltek and it was unbearable. Really boomy on the motorway, it actually gave you a headache if you were in it for prolonged periods of time.
In the end I sold the Milltek and got a standard 182 exhaust back on it.

I am 6 4" and I have removed the two rear washers below the seat rails. This creates more rake in the seat base and still allows the seat to slide properly.Try it if you haven't already.

This is a good idea and I might give it a go. The passenger seat is about an inch higher as well which explains (partly) why the missus feels sick in it so might investigate that as well.Try it if you haven't already.
