Short version:

Thoughts?

Similarities/differences?

Long version:

I own a 182 at present. I'd like to own a V6 smile

I've read a fair amount about the V6s, but would be delighted to read the views of someone who has owned both a 182 (or one of the other RS 2.0ls) and one of the V6 variants.

I've read, for example, that a 182 is likely to be pretty much as quick on many tracks or on a B road since the V6 is compromised by a bit of twitchiness due to weight distribution.

This doesn't really interest me - I'm not one for track days or driving so that I might lose it on a B road or roundabout. I'm more about just enjoying the roads, giving it a good spurt on the straights and such things driving

I've always had a soft spot for Renaultsports - that's the main reason I bought a 182 over the other hot hatches, once I knew a hot hatch could make sense.

I do around 10,000 miles annually at present, but I'm not sure if I'd envisage doing quite so many miles in a V6. I'd like to keep the miles "special" if that makes any sense - I'd find other ways of doing the journeys I do just now that need a boring motorway slog.

I always smile on the rare occasions I see a V6 on the road. Even in pictures, I can't stop looking at them. I think I may be obsessed cloud9

Done more reading and googling and there's loads more out there than I thought, actually.

If anyone has anything in particular to add, feel free smile

General opinion seems to be that it's not as good to drive as the 182. It snaps when the limit of the grip is reached! That said, obviously it depends how you drive it, and I think a v6 would have such a sense of occasion attached to it that the on-the-limit handling wouldn't matter smile

Cheers smile

Yeah I'm getting that impression.

I've barely ever understeered in my 182 apart from the odd occasion on a wet roundabout to see how it reacts, so as long as the V6 is set up properly I don't expect to breaking traction regularly.

I think I'll budget for variable costs of double the 182, and cut my mileage by a few K per year.

I.E. 20-25ish instead of 30-35ish mpg for my type of driving, tyres at £250 instead of £125 for.

I don't imagine suspensio., brakes, etc will be massively different to a182.

Guy at my work owns a 182 & a v6 255. Ive not owned a 172/182, but i have owned 2 x v6 230's & had a lift to work in said 182 for about 2 years.

The cars are very different behaviour, if very similar in speed and look the same when your sat in them!
V6 Handling wise, ignore all the rubbish you read. On the road, they handle fantastic. You cant enter tight corners as fast as a 182, but boy can you exit them fast.

V6's can be laugh out loud fun & are great to drive at 2-3k rpm, you dont need to rag as much.

They are not expensive to run, but the bespoke stuff such as body panels and the hard to reach stuff such as clutches, gearboxes, engines can bring in some bills that are more than the cost of buying a 182.

I drove my first v6 as my daily. I averaged 23-24mpg, owned it for 2+ years, did about 20k miles in it and sold it for what nearly exactly what i paid for it.

Go for it!, theres no car like it for similar money. Proper mini exotica stuff!

Hi, i had a Cup 172 when they first came out, it was a great car...kept it for around 2 yrs. It felt like a quick hot hatch.

I currently have a V6 255, its been with me for 2 yrs, i don't think i'll ever sell it, its not my only car but feels so special to drive every time i get in it. Took it on a tour of Scotland last year in all weathers and it didn't put a foot wrong.Every time i parked it up people were asking questions ! You won't regret buying one.

Fantastic cars - here's the one i used to own #175 smile

Only sold it as i had the chance to move onto an Exige, but it's one of those cars that i would love to own again in the future as it was so much fun, and the engine noise teamed with a decent aftermarket rear box was awesome cool

Not sure if you've found the site already by searching, but there is loads of useful info & owners on v6clio.net smile

I was thinking "this thread needs pics" hehe

Thanks folks, those are exactly the sorts of insights I was after!

Didn't really expect anyone here to say it spat them out of a corner at a reasonable speed or anything hehe

Still a bit of saving to be done yet.

Some time in the next year though, it'll be a readers' cars thread wink

Any unexpected (big) bills for any of you?

I can't imagine there's many people invest so much in a car to rag it about, so cases of neglect will be relatively rare.

In the year i owned mine running costs were fairly similar to other performance cars i've owned when it comes to fuel, insurance, normal servicing, etc.

Saying that i sold mine a year before the belt service was due, and i know that is a fairly large, and can be expensive job, so i avoided that hehe I was also lucky in the fact the previous owner of mine had traded it into a specialist for an E46 M3, and they had to pay for 4 new tyres as the old ones were close to the limit so i avoided that cost as well hehe

Only problem i had with mine was that one of the coilpacks failed so i had to limp the car home frown Easily sorted though by buying a new one from the dealer and fitted it on the drive smile

The people on v6clio tend to keep a good eye on the cars & associated history of the build numbers so any that have been written off/repaired/stolen are normally known.

Most of these cars will be cared for by known/trusted specialists and have been well looked after if it's been in the hands of an enthusiast.

Most body panels are around a grand so dont hit anything!!

The common big bill is the cambelt - which is due every 5 years - budget around £1200 to do a proper job.
Doing a major service at the same time as the cambelt, and a new clutch, tyres, brake pads etc.. could easily clear 2-3K. But you would only have this bill once in 5 years. Ideally find one thats had this done already!

Brake discs where historically extortionate, but alternatives have been found.

You would be suprised on the neglect front too!! I am the v6clio.net club registrar so spend alot of time keeping track of the cars. ALOT of them have history/missing important expensive parts/major gaps in service history. You really need to do your home work on the specifc car you are looking to and by from an enthusiast who has spent money on it.

Thanks again.

I don't intend to have any incidents requiring body panels, but then again - who does? hehe

The next service on my 182 will be the 72,000 miler in a few months, so that'll be a bill as long as my arm, to set me up for V6 ownership! Then it'll be in tip-top saleable condition, hopefully nice and easy to sell with a recent belts and related bits changed at my local specialist.

It's weird. I'd kind of forgotten about V6s for a while, then one popped into my head yesterday, so I had a look on PH/Autotrader - now I'm into the buying research!

That's sad to hear, although it's been a while since i had mine (when values were over £16-17k), so i'm guessing the drop in resale prices for them has allowed certain people to get hold of them and not look after them frown Same thing happened with the MK1 Focus RS, when the prices on some dipped under £8k as it opened them up to the chavs who've generally thrashed/killed quite a few over the last 3 or so years frown

I have spent quite a bit in 2 yrs...Discs and pas all round, Trophy coils to hopefully put an end to faulty coil packs, 2 new aircon pipes, Recaro trendline seats, wheel refurb, 4 tyres,Janspeed exhaust which sounds fantastic and servicing....all done by SG motorsport who are one of the recomended specialists for the V6.

How do you find the seats?

I think I'd prefer Recaros as a wee change from the 182.

I must be one of the few people that quite enjoy the 182 seating position, though. I like to be quite close to the wheel so being a bit higher up allows my long legs a bit more flex.

Afraid I can't offer any help in the comparison stakes, but can add fuel to your fire with a gratuitous ClioV6 photo from a PH Ecosse run earlier this year:

Roll on spring and the end of SORN...

Be warned - these cars get under your skin. I sold this one to another owners club member (now on his 4th Vee) and bought it back about 6-months later...

Think I'm in a pretty good position to answer any queries. Sold my Clio 200 to get a V6, but had a 172 track car at the same time (now crashed...) and also owned a Clio Trophy before that.

The Vee is something else, you can't really compare them, the only similarity is the interior to the 182, but even when you're in it you can tell it's something different.

Driving wise I'll happily say that the 200 and Trophy would have it licked on any B road or track. Maybe because they're easier to drive (?) or because of the renowned twitchiness I'm more cautious in the Vee. This is a funny one for me as I buy cars, generally, for the 'drive' and it seems like a bit of step backwards.

However, what the Vee lacks in ultimate handling and pace on the B roads, it more than makes up for it in the sense of occasion stakes. I drive mine every day, and though probably could afford a little run around, I can't bring myself to do so. This morning, for example, it was about -1 at mine, snuggled into the car, fired up the noise that is with you in the cabin, crawled over the speedbumps that go into my estate, then roar out onto the main road (only at about 1/4 throttle and taking it easy as not warm yet). Tootle down the orad, hit the ring road, fully warm, give it the beans, noise is ridiculously addictive. My MPG doesn't show, can't fix it, but don't think I want to - ignorance is bliss.

Everywhere you go you will get comments. I've been waved at by people at red lights to wind the window and ask about it, petrol stations (where I spend a lot of my time) I usually get 1 comment, normally from behind the desk. Often someone has a chat about it, even if it's just to ask what it is, or if I've fitted the bodykit...

I love it, will probably never sell

But, the one thing I do miss is going for a drive 'on the limit'. We have some great roads near me - the Yorkshire Dales - and there are some roads that I would never take the Vee down for fear of getting air and cracking the bumper, being too tight and twisty to push it. Ideally (read if the mrs lets me) I'll get a 1*2, maybe a Trophy next year to do the commute, trackdays, and these runs out and keep the Vee a special treat.

Other things, tyres are a lot more £300 for a set of fronts, £400 for the rears if they're a good tyre, mpg obviously worse, no more 3 point turns - 5 or more usually, lack of a boot - though I am a football coach and manage to get in bibs, cones and about 6 balls in the front. I've not had to service it yet, but big jobs like cambelt, clutch are more expensive as it's an engine out jobbie. Insurance is a fair bit more, £550 for the 200 compared to £800 for the Vee.

Any other Q's fire away. V6Clio.net is also an excellent place to join, lots of info, and loads of experts that can answer questions (I'm just learning at the minute)

I hate the comments about being twitchy...bks they are. Ignore that.

My suggestion would be to get over to the V6forum for advice.

I've done an honest review of the car on Cliosport to give folk with 172/182's etc advice on my ownership experience. You may find it of interest. It's a bit dated now as i'm rarely on the forum.

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?5332...

Happy to take any specific questions once you've digested the above.

To be fair Ali you've had yours a while so probably know the limits better. I'm still finding them for me, and an example was me going sideways round a corner following some friends that went round fine and quicker in their Clio 197/200 and Megane R26/265. I slowed and still went round sideways...
