Anyone got anything running this engine?

I got my new DS5 company car on Friday, and so far it's not proving to be very good with the black stuff.

I know the engine will be tight at first and mpg should improve with more miles, but I did expect a bit better than 37mpg when driving it relatively carefully over 600 mainly motorway miles... my previous 58 plate Mondeo 2.2 tdci averaged 39 and it was thrashed mercilessly.

I've got an old 2.0HDi 8v lump in the Picasso and that averages 48mpg urban and about 54mpg on long runs.

It's not standard, ditched the EGR and cat, which helped improve pick-up slightly. That in turn improved the economy a bit. Then I remapped it, which made it alot quicker and alot more frugal. Before all that it was averaging about 42-43mpg urban and 47 on a run. Did drop into the 30's once when the AFR went up the spout.

This is no help to you whatsoever though I'm afraid!

What does it weigh? It looks like a mighty big car. Is it auto or manual?
Much of this modern auto diesely stuff has gone downhill in economy.. The A4 2.0tdi multitronic I just rented did 38.5 mpg on a long run up the M1 (in all the 50 limits). For 140bhp. My friend's car records only a little better.

Am interested to hear about the DS5 more generally.

It's not that big (significantly smaller inside than my previous Mondeo for example), but it is heavy - almost 1,700kg. And it's a manual.

Only had it 5 days, but so far I really like it. It’s a mid spec DStyle, in Hurricane Grey (dark, flat grey - looks dark blue in some lights) with upgrade to full leather in lama (pale stone colour) – I’d have preferred a different exterior colour, but the leather upgrade took my entire extras allowance and I wasn’t paying £600 for metallic out of my own pocket. I’d definitely recommend the full leather though as it includes leccy seats which have a much better range of adjustment than the standard half leather ones (full leather is standard in the DSport)… they are also heated, with memory settings and have a massage function.

I’ve read quite a bit of criticism of the ride/handling in the motoring press, but it’s really nothing like that bad. OK, it's not in the same league as a 3 series, or even a Mondeo, but it's decent enough to drive and easily a match for something like an A4 or a V60. Handling wise it’s OK… it’s fairly stiffly suspended and the steering is like a lot of cars nowadays (quick, direct, but zero feel), but that’s not really the point of a car like this. The ride can get unsettled on badly surfaced urban roads but settles down nicely at speed and the seats are very comfy, so they take most of the rough edges off. Where it’s really good is at c.90 on the motorway, where is cruises almost silently (very little engine, tyre or wind noise) and for me, that’s where it will get used most (40k+ miles per year).

I do miss the extra shove the Mondeo had – it’s fine off the line, but the Mondeo would really pull if dropped to 5th at 75-80, whereas the DS takes a bit longer to get back up to speed… I might get it remapped if it doesn’t get better with miles.

The interior is a fantastic place to sit… great materials, feels VERY solidly built, good driving position, lots of equipment (a 3 series at the same spec would be c.£35k). For the most part it works well too… although the ‘cockpit roof’ and flat bottomed steering wheel are a bit novelty.

Some pics (from a fishing trip with my nephew this weekend)...

Almost 1,400 miles now, and a little improvement...

Last tank was almost all motorway, a lot at 65/70 in traffic on the M1 Sunday night, but also a proper 81 mile thrash down the M40 Friday night... 52.6l refill, trip said 457 miles. 39.4 actual mpg vs trip at 37.1 mpg. Still disappointing, but moving in the right direction. And the first car I've had where the actual mpg is better than the trip computer!

Does make me wonder if manufacturers are manipulating engine maps to get good CO2/MPG numbers on the official tests to the detriment of real world results, and subsequently, if a remap might improve both consumption AND performance.

Perfectly timed write up. I'm very interested in the DS5 as its a bit different and looks great. Had a faultless 407 coupe for 3 years, so not worried about all the usual 'it'll break' comments.
Only thing is, it'll be a private purchase so I'll either have to wait for a second hand one or a significant discount would be needed.
