I am thinking of buying 306 soft top and just want some pointers on what to look for I already have a 306 hatch and have had a estate too. But both where diesels and the car i have in mind is 1.8 16V Petrol the latter engine. As the car is a 51 plate. Also what to look for regarding roofs and electrics etc. Anything that helps is a plus

The roof can be troublesome so make sure it works easily through the full cycle.Try it a few times, they can get "tired" and need shoving up by hand to get started.Try also that the electric rear 1/4 windows are working. If you can see into the rear 1/4 panels look for oil leaks around the pipes.Every one I have done its been a pipe in the right hand 1/4 panel that has split.Check round the roof fabric for damage and splits and the rear window can get very faded. The suspension and steering is almost the same as your other 306`s so its just the elementary stuff you may already know about??check for rattles and noises particularly the rear radius arms?? Two other "306" faults :leaking heater matrix? make sure the carpets are dry and the windscreen is not "sticky".Damaged wiring from the "A" post to the door? make sure all the door electrics work together with the central locking. The XU 16V engine is great and only suffers with the odd idle control sensor fault and the like.Find out the cambelt history? any doubt get it replaced along with the waterpump and aux` belt and make sure the aux` belt tensionor is OK.
They are a nice car provided everything works and its been looked after.A classic of the future???

Bootlid seals can be troublesome do check for moisture in the boot. As said, the hydraulic roof mechanism is very complex so check the operation. As standard the roof cannot be powered whilst the engine is running. This is obviously, bloody stupid. There is an easy modification where this can be bypassed and there is guide over on 306cabrioletclub somewhere.

Lovely cars, however the very reliable 1.8 is a bit overwhelmed by the weight of the cabriolet, if I were looking at one again then I'd be looking soley at the 2.0 - the mpg is still sub-30 but at least it can pull the extra weight.

Rear windows can also go milky as they are the plastic type. Oh an finally; check the built-in hair dryer works. Seriously. Located behind the rear headrests it directs warm air at the rear window to clear it in the colder months - operated by the heated rear window switch on the dash (if it works...)
