1986 205 gearbox question.
Discussion
Hi, hoping someone on here knows the ins and outs of 205s.
I have a 1989 205 gti which has a fairly normal drain/fill/level on the gearbox. But I recently bought a 1986 205 1.0 xe (xv8 engine I think). The xe appears to have no filler or level bolts/caps, reading the haynes manual it hints that the gearbox uses the engine oil (like a common oil supply on a mini engine) on these very early 205s. Having done a bit of a search on the net, I can't find much reference to this (seems the xv8 engine was only used for a year to 2 before chaning to the TU engines).
Does anyone know if it is a single common oil supply for the engine and box? Or is the a filler cap hidden somewhere?
Thanks
Jim600.

I`m pretty sure a 1986 1.0 will have the "laid back" XV8 engine with an integral gear box (in the sump)and the engine oil serves the lot.If the rocker cover is facing the bulk head and the oil filter is facing upwards its a XV8 (could have 108C in the chassis number.
From 1987 they had a TU9 engine with a conventional separate MA gearbox. That is an upright engine with the rocker cover facing the bonnet and the oil filter facing the radiator.

Thanks, that confirms my suspicions, the rocker cover faces right back into the bulk head, and oil filter sticks out the top next to the carb. So XV8 it must be. In which case, looks like it just takes 4.5l of 10w40 to do both the engine and box then.
