Hi All,

I've got a 2008 1.2 clio TCE which i've had from virtually new for all of four years now (it was my first car). Lately i've notice a weird humming/ wheezy type sound which is more audible than the actual engine sound (the engine has always been pretty quiet), I don't know how to describe it really I just don't know enough about these things so any advice as to what it could be would be very much appreciated.

For info;
  • I can hear it when stationary and moving.
  • Definately sounds like its coming from the engine area
  • Gets louder with rev's rather than speed
  • For the split second that I put the clutch in to change gear it goes (possibly because i'm taking my foot off the accelerator?)
  • I've checked all oil levels etc and all is fine
  • There doesn't seem to be any change in power or lack of, when driving.
  • I can change gears smoothly with no issue
  • The car passed the MOT a month or so ago with no issues
I'm stumped frown so any ideas at all would be really helpful. Thanks in advance smile

Have you checked to see if the air filter and pipes are still correctly fitted? Something may have come a little loose. Also when was it serviced last and the air filter changed? It may be clogged up if it's never been done or not been done in a while.

If that leads to no answers, then my next step would be checking the exhaust system and if it's coming from the engine looking around the manifold area.

Hi, Thanks very much for the reply thats really useful, it's not due another service for about 8k miles but I have to be honest im not sure that they touched the air filter during the last one, I'll have to check my paperwork when I get home this evening, I had a fair bit of work done on my aircon/ heating/ cooling system recently by Renault which is now fixed but whether that has any bearing I dont know. I've had a lot of electrical issue's with this car frown

In laymans terms because I don't really know anything about this sort of stuff, to check the air filter and pipes where abouts would I have to look/ what am I looking for? Sorry to sound stupid frown but any pointers would be great.
Edit: Don't worry about the filter pointers actually I found what it looks like on google so I'll check it out this evening smile

I really do appreciate the help biggrin

Does it only do it with the aircon on? Just a thought as I've had previous renaults where the aircon 'hums' in tune with the engine RPM. Dont think it's a fault as such, just a feature.

Hi it does sound exactly like the air con hum actually but it does it when the air con/ fans are all off and nothing electrical like a sat nav is plugged in, its very odd. Thanks for the response though
