So since my current steed is starting to get a little bit long in the tooth I have started eying up potential replacements.

With a budget of 2.5k it would appear that both these cars are in budget and could make good options but which would you go for and can anyone give a good comparision.

I would use the car to get to work, about 10 miles each way on a nice twisty road. Occasionally driving a little further at the weekends and maybe a track day or 2 a year (nothing serious but just for fun)

My thoughts

Pug - I like the shape more that the Clio and would prob get a better (newer and less miles version) on for the money

Clio - Prob a better driving car? Possibly cost me more to keep going

Any thoughts greatly appriciated

Clio. Think get a good 172 rather than a bad 182.

Forget the Peugeot.

^^^ The 206 will make the Clio look/feel German,utterly unreliable,shame really.

Get a nice 172 Cup,plenty of good examples around,do not pick the cheapest one though.

The 206 is not really on the same level.

Having owned a mk1 172 for just over a year, then selling for a GTi-6 which I've now had for over 8 years, defo go for the GTi-6! Maybe I had a bad 172, but it went through 2 gearboxes and had a whole list of problems, track work seemed to kill it. My GTi-6 however, track work, Nurburgring, no major problems, just general wear and tear. Not as quick off the line, but once rolling and top end, quicker and much more fun to chuck around.

The Pug was compared to the 172 when it was new and generally got pretty crappy reviews compared to the Renault. However, as an ex Peugeot owner and a current 172 owner I would go and drive both and base your opinions on that. The Pug is likely to be a little better built (the renault is rubbish compared to my old Peugeots) and if it's a little less raw than the Clio then it will be all the better for it. Magazine reviews seem to be based on the idea that everyone drives at 10/10ths or on a track all the time whereas in reality loud focused little cars can be a bit tiring sometimes.

As above though, if you can find a GOOD GTI-6 then get one. Don't buy a cheap one, it'll be st and cost millions to mantain properly.

As stoat says you can get very nice ones and not so bad ones.
Luckily we can advise you on this smile

The golden rule though is start it from cold and check it doesnt sound like a sewing machine.....

the engine is generally reliable providing you change the cambelt at the correct 30k interval.

Also The 306 gti-6 was compared to a 172 on release.

Proof of this is a year 2000 copy of evo i have in which there was a group test of all hatches at the time and the outcome was

1st: 306gti6
2nd: 106 gti
3rd: 172 ff

There is no doubt that the 306 is the better all rounder and in my opinion the better car. The 306 "feels" better when pushed although the Clio has more outright grip and is slightly quicker although there really is nothing in it in normal driving. 306 is better inside and has better suspension too.

Your chances of finding a really good 306 now are slim however whereas there are millions of newer tidy 172/182's to chose from and that's the only reason I bought a Clio above the 306.

Don't discount it because of a load of people on the internet! Go and drive it, you may like it and you're not buying it for us or anybody else for that matter smile

I'd like to have a go in one and compare it to the 172 myself regardless of what everyone else says.
