As above, I've just bought a black 106 GTi. It's got 100k on the clock, so not young, and it'll likely need something fixing.

So, what's are ommon failings on these cars? And...

What are the most common upgrades?

Had no intention of buying a 106, but after a 15 minute test drive - I fell in love! Haha ; )

get a new exhaust on there, it makes a good difference. the saxsport i had on my saxo VTS made a huge difference. i'd also recommend new shocks and springs. the apex kit is fantastic considering the price, and made the car a huge amount more stable, especially at higher speeds

common failings, being french, is just about everything at some point in its life. the trailing arm bearings are probably the most common, and expensive problems with the car

Great, thanks mate - ill get Googling!

Are parts cheap enough? I only paid a grand and a bit for the car, so a few quid spend isn't going to sting too much. Obviously the cheaper the better ; )

very cheap, and plenty of bits about. get on 106 owners club or saxperience, plenty of good information, and lots of stuff for sale on there usually!

You can put 306 gti-6 brakes on them which makes them VERY VERY stoppy :P

Seriously the brakes are good on a 306, put them on a 106 and it make 4pot pointless really.

As with all peugeot hatches of this age is worth getting a rebuilt beam, You can get them for about £360 from the right people.
Other than that, wishbones bushes, droplinks etc sound refresh things a bit.
Depends how far you want to go with it really.

Cool thanks, I'll do that!

Just picked the car up. It looks mint, but there's a few jobs need doing. It's slightly lumpy when idle, although a good service might sort that, and the central locking doesn't work too well... Common fault or just dodgy electrics?

It does sit quite high so I might buy a suspension kit... Never been into modifying cars, but the Pug seems so cheap to upgrade!

If you're running the standard 14" alloys you may be better off with 306 XSi or 206 GTi calipers as the GTi-6 brakes don't fit

What the difference between the 106 Gti and the Rallye?

Power/wheight and most importantly how they drive,i see much people getting the "inferior" Rallye over the faster/more powerful Gti.

106 GTi 1.6 16v with 120bhp and all mod cons except air con
Rallye is a 1.6 8v with 100bhp with nothing on there, a 'basic' GTi but weighs less

There's the earlier 1.3 Rallye also with a little less bhp than the 1.6.

Indeed there is but I should've mentioned that I was comparing the series 2 106 as the series 1 'GTi' was the XSi with iirc the same engine that was carried over into the series 2 Rallye

Lumpy idle will most likely be a dirty idle control valve. Give it a clean and see if it clears up. If not try a new one, if not still then it can be down to engine management and starts getting technical then.

Cammed cars that have not been mapped to suit always have a lumpy idle too. Cammed cars are often sold on as standard as it makes them easier to sell and if the cam was bought second hand or fitted DIY there's not any real proof so many choose not to mention it lol.

Am I the only one who has experienced this fault with 106`s?? Weak Floors!! I`ve found many where the floor cracks around the trap nuts for the seat fixings,on some the seat pulled out of the floor!!,same with the trap nuts for the hand brake lever bolts.I have also seen the lower engine mount pull out of the floor.I`ve been around 106`s ever since they were introduced, great little cars mechanically but the body shell has got me worried, talk to someone who has used a 106 on an endurance rally?

Love 106 GTi's. Get a set of Bilstein B8's and Faulkner -45mm springs on there and it will out handle most things about.

Then get yourself a 3" Pugs Sport exhaust and a green cotton filter for the standard airbox as they really open them up.
