207 head gasket
Discussion
The other half has just been told the head gasket on her 4 year old 207 has gone. It's only done 27,000 miles but only really does short trips. I have not had a chance to look at it myself but was wondering if is this a known / common problem?
She has a couple of quotes to repair but what would you expect it to cost?
Thanks in advance,
J

Still not enough info??. If its the 8valve very easy job,4 - 5hrs labour charge and if its the 16valve more like 7 - 8hrs labour charge. On both engines, new head gasket,10 head bolts, cambelt,+ a few "odds" Total parts £70 - £80. Why does the gasket need changing?? what are the symptoms? the only time the 8v needs a head gasket is to correct an oil leak, other wise its a rare job.Unless of course the engine has been "cooked" due to a water leak from the rad or what ever. Before you give the go ahead I would satisfy yourself that the gasket really does need changing.

If it's the 1.4 8v Peugeot will do it under warranty. We're a Peugeot main dealer, it's an acknowledged fault. Anything under 4 years and up to 80k. Even if it's slightly over and you've got full main dealer history your dealer should be able to push it through.
That`s interesting, what is the fault? are we talking about oil leaking near the timing cover?ajh38 said:
It's not specific to the actual fault, we have a list of acknowledged faults and the head gasket in the 1.4 8v is one of them. Thankfully that engine has died with the 207. Truly awful.
Are we talking about the age old TU 8v? The one that started life in 205`s in the 80`s and has appeared in 306`s 206`s etc.ajh38 said:
It's called xu now but essentially the same 1.4 8v, 74 or 75 bhp. It is better in the 206 as its a lighter, better proportioned car. The new 1.2 in the 208 is looking great.
That`s confusing ? An XU to me would be the old 2 litre petrol and diesel engines that came out in the early 80`s,205GTi,405GLD,etc and ended late 90`s.Even when under the 207's bonnet, it was still called TU3. Head gasket failure was (is) fairly common when the engine wasn't properly taken care of: timely engine coolant flushes/changes are essential to its wellbeing.
XU's are the angled engines that bigger pugs were usually fitted with. 1.6, 1.8, 2 litre etc.

Have to be honest, I cover the sales department, remembering the coding of engines doesn't come easy! Whatever the weather, that 8v is horrible and I'll be happy if I never have to see it again. Having said that I don't imagine the 1.0l taken straight from the 107 to be awe inspiring either!
They stopped making the xu engine years ago, but the xu and the tu engines are very good engines. It just that peugeots got a lot bigger and heavier than the cars they first used in (citreon ax, peugeot 305) its an old design, but tough.
One thing to note, on tu engines that do short trips they get "mayo" on the inside of the oil cap due to condensation, sometimes people think this head gasket problems, but there is nothing wrong with them.
It all sounds a bit iffy to me.

HiI've got a 09 Plate Peugeot 207 1.4 16v and have been informed that my head gasket is leaking oil. The car has only done just under 27,000. Will this be done under the 4 year warranty you explained above.
Many thanks

The best place for an answer is a Peugeot Dealer or Peugeot Customer Services.I've got a 09 Plate Peugeot 207 1.4 16v and have been informed that my head gasket is leaking oil. The car has only done just under 27,000. Will this be done under the 4 year warranty you explained above.
