Finding and fitting a new gear stick (205)

Hi,
Already posted on the 205 forum... but bottom line is I wanted to put an original gear knob on my 205 GTI unfortunately the gear stick was hacked previously so it won't fit. Now gear knobless the car needs a new gear stick for my shiny new to me gear knob... however...
After a days searching I can't find one for a start but also can't work out how to remove the old one.
Can they be removed from inside the car by taking out the centre console or do they pop off the long rod from underneath the car then remove from inside and slide the new stick down? I guess what I'm asking here do I need to get the rubber gaiter inside the centre console off or not. Can't find a pic anywhere without the rubber gaiter at all.
Or is it best to get a quickshifter and if so will it fit the original gear knob?
