Hi guys,
I'm looking at getting a 172 or 182 cliosport. Iwondered if anyone could explain what the difference is between them!? (other than the obvious power difference)

Any comments appreciated
Thanks biggrin

Performance wise very very little. I think they got the extra 10hp using a different manifold. But the car is slightly heavier.

The 182 seemed to be available in a wider range of colours and has the twin exhaust sticking out the back which in my opinion looks naff. Some like it, and that seems to be the deciding factor between the two for many people.

Also note the 182cup is not regarded highly like the 172 cup. Something about specs that I cant remember but apparently best avoided. The cliosport forum will have more info on this. And it's worth joining up as they all seem to share the same niggles which you'll find helpful info on.

Try that link. It may need a log in but it tells you everything you need to know about the differences between 172/182/cup and cup-packs

I have a 172 and a 182 and really cannot tell a difference except for mods on the 172. Either one will in my opinion put a smile on your face. The 182's and late 172's will give you cruise control but are well equipped and great fun to drive.

Only difference is the exhaust manifold and cat on 182, giving the extra 10 bph. If you go for a 182, you want both of the 'cup packs' giving slightly better shocks, springs, and a slightly wider track front and rear. Or go for the 172 Cup, which has the chassis upgrades, but by losing kit is 80kg lighter, also has nicer light weight 'speedline' wheels. The 182 cup is not rated as it is only 15kg lighter than a standard 182, due to still having abs and various other bits. The 15kg isnt really worth losing for the nicer seats etc in the standard car.

I'm having the same thoughts and have concluded you should just buy on condition and who has had a cambelt and dephaser pulley done and which has been looked after best, which has ditchfinders fitted etc etc.

One dealer I went to was using theirs as storage receptacle for fuel cans, coats, gloves etc - this really put me off before I even started.

I'm going to look at a 172 and a 182. the latter has Xenons and washers but I've never been one for added complexity or difficulty changing bulbs.

Is there any advntage or disadvantage to them or is it something else to fail the MOT if it goes wrong?

A phase 2 172 will also have xenons. There'll be plenty available on the second hand market if you need a bulb replacement
But bear in mind xenon bulbs last longer than conventional halogen.

I've had both. Currently own a 182 and used to own a phase 1 172.

There's not much in it to be honest. The 182 feels a little better handling, more planted. Although it could be down to tyres, better condition dampers etc.

The cable throttle on the 172 was superb. The electronic throttle in the 182 is a little slow to react, especially lower in the rev range. Not a huge problem I just prefer the response of a cable throttle.

The 182 has miles more kit than a phase 1 172 but between the phase 2 and 182 the only difference I can think of it cruise control.
