Clio 172 or Clio 182?
Discussion
I am coming up to the stage of needing a new car, not literally new, but not turning 21, like the BMW.
So I have been looking at the Clio 172, and as I am turning 21 in September I got a couple of quotes and they seem reasonable, as I am a young-ish driver with Zero no claims but nearly four years named driver experience. I like the look of the Phase 1 but it won't come with the extras of the phase 2, like Xenons and climate or the CD changer; so I am not too sure which to properly start looking at.
My choice of car is quite dependent on insurance, but that is hovering around the £1000 when I turn 21. The 172 on a 53 plate (not cup or anything) was £1001.53 and the 182 Cup on a 55 Plate is £921.47 to insure. Not entirely sure why it is cheaper but, more fun for me maybe?
I was just wondering in your opinion which would be the best one to look at? I don't do too many miles so over 30mpg is fine, although I did hear that the 172 can do 42Mpg on the motorway. Budget is ever increasing so I think insurance and car all in should be at the absolute maximum of £5k. This was originally £3K, but insurance is a lot more than expected.
Any help would be appreciated and if there are any other cars that you could recommend that would be super

having had 3 rs clio's and been around a 4 friends and 1 brother who own some variant of them id say o for a full fat 182 with both cup packs... make sure the belt's have been done and the correct tyres are on the car (these make a huge difference and mostly what makes the car the cup spec.
Have a look at the Liquid Yellow ones very rare and an expensive option from new... http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3833574.htm
(not my car or anything to do with me just an example)
Or even a trophy for that money... http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3851304.htm
(same as above lol)
Edited for stupidity

Best one to look at is probably going to be... the one that looks best
There will be 172s that are in better condition than some 182s, but it's likely the 182s will be in general better condition since they are newer.
I find it difficult to get less than 32 mpg average out of a tank.
There are plenty of threads like this about:
- belt service is expensive and essential
- engine mounts can wear (knock under hard acceleration/lift off)
Buy on condition and evidence of care

I'd completely disagree. I've had 6 (a mix of ph1 172, ph2 172, 182cup and Trophy). The ph2 172 would be my choice. Cheaper, the exhaust is cheaper to replace (the standard ones rust badly), slightly better mpg (31ish compared to 35ish). And if you decide to do any modifications in future, there are more suspension options. The 182cup (and 182 with cup suspension) has different hubs, and won't take the same coilovers as the 172/182 (without cup suspension).
A late 172 will have cruise etc, same as a 182.
Buyers guide on cliosport.net is worth a look. If you can ignore the morons, it's a useful site.
