306 electrical gremlins
Discussion
Hi Guys
Just bought myself a 306 1.9TD GLX as a cheap runabout. Mechanically runs lovely but just a few electrical gremlins (quelle surprise) and was wondering if anyone can point me the right way
1. Electric mirrors. Drivers side works up and down but not side to side. Passenger side work side to side but not up and down
2. Passenger side elctric window does not work
3. Central locking does not work. Locks but then unlocks itself after about a second. All solenoids checked and are turning interior lights off.
4. Dash lights work but no backlight to the clock or odometer
Not sure what to look at first, whether this might be the door loom or something similar
It was only £500 and other than these niggles is in lovely nick. My 5th French car out of last 6 and the only one to let me down mechanically is the Ford

The odo and clock issues will be the bulbs behind, They are fairly simple to replace, theres a good guide on 306gti6.com in the FAQ section but you may need to pay the joining fee.
That site is a 306 goldmine though even if you dont have a gti-6 its still worth it as theres lots of guides with images.

1 is likely to be the mirror coming off the runners on the mechanism. They all break and I've never fixed one and just lived with it but the easiest solution would be a complete electric mirror from a scrappy for a tenner then swap the coloured cap over. Millions of very cheap spares for these on fleabay.
2 and 3 are probably both the same broken door loom. The black rubber thing between the door and the A pillar that carries the cables. Cleverly they are too short on the earlier models (fixed-ish on the phase 3's) so they stretch and snap over time. Easiest way to fix is to remove the door - two bolts, can't remember size - which only takes five mins, unplug the loom then strip back the rubber sheath thing and cut and shut broken cables with new wire and a soldering iron.

First thing to check on 306 electrics is the door loom, snip off the cable tie, (if it's still there), carefully pull the rubber cover back to expose the wires and then count how many are broken.
Peugeot do a repair loom but every wire has to be cut and replaced, you might just get away with repairing 1 or 2 wires in situ as a temporary measure.
(I have done about 20 of these over the years)
Hope that helps you.
