Hi all,

My 205 has quite a bad leak coming from the engine bay but i can't see where. It's seems to be an oil of some sort but it's clear with a slight orange tint. Any ideas?

I'd like to have a rough idea before i take it to a garage.

If it helps it is a Xsara VTS engine with MI16 gearbox and clutch.

The gear box oil on mine is nearly clear. Does the leak smell sweet?
Generally gti6 engines leak either by the cam covers and coils or underneath between the box and engine from the crank seal

Pop some cardboard under it and let us know which item of hardware it is dripping from

Check engine oil level.

Does drip speed increase with engine running?

The smell is quite sweet. No it doesnt increase when engine is running or throttle is applied. I'll try the cardboard idea when it stops raining haha. Thanks for the help so far guys - just wanted to have a rough idea what it might be so that i know the garage aren't going to fleece me for something it's not.

Power steering would be red Id think. Were are you noticing it, floor or actually in the bay? And where in the bay.

It's made a mess of the driveway so it's dripping on the floor as aposed to being in the bay. It seems to be in the middle and to the left so I have a feeling it maybe the gearbox seel to the engine.

Ahhhh ok I have this too in my gti6 to a lesser degree.
It's 100% the crank seal its quite common two. Should be damp where the box and engine join underneath

Ah right - cheers for the help all. Any idea if the crank seal will be expensive to replace in a garage? I'm assuming it will be mainly labour as aposed to the part itself.

Indeed, the part doesn't cost a lot its just the labour really. Might as well fit a lighted flywheel while the box is off
