Renaultsport Clio 197 or 200 - which one?
Discussion
Was in a similar situ to you, looking at cheaper 197's or 10k 200's - in the end settled on a mint, low miles R27 197 with all the toys, cup spoliers etc.
You'd be looking around 8k price wise but should hopefully hold its money better, it also feels like you're driving something a bit special too. If you do go down this route, check its had all the warranty work done, ours had worn Recaros replaced, new (revised) gearbox and also door seals. As some will also be coming up to 5 years old now, they will also require Cambelt change so factor that into price also.

I have a 200 and can say its the most fun I have ever had in a car! And I have been lucky enough to drive some other nice cars, Also If its for using on the Track the 200 with cup pack is amazing and has so much mechanical grip. Its a really great car for blasting round circuits and is very well damped on the roads too.

Would love a V6 but because this will be my only car I couldn't live with just 2 seats and the other impracticalities - plus the big fuel bills no doubt. Will have to be a 200 or 197!
If mpg is an issue you should think long and hard before getting either car !depending on your driving style 22-28 mpg is your likely range !
ps Would add to the comment above about being a very enjoyable drive

Wasn't the 197 slated for for being a bit gutless which was improved with the 200? Never driven either so only rehashing what (I think) I've read elsewhere.
I think the general consensus that they are the same car with a few minor tweaks on the 200 to sort some fairly minor niggles on the 197.The 200 can feel gutless unless you wring it's neck (I mean have it in the right gear sitting at >4000 rpm)
They are great cars - no doubt
but they are not economic !

I have just purchased a 197. Went in to my local Renault main dealer to look at a 200 and they had a 197 Lux (full leather, climate control + more) up for £7,495. A little bit of haggling later and it's now mine for £6,700. It's an 09 plate with 50k miles, FSH, and in absolutely immaculate condition. Complete bargain and I couldn't refuse.
Even more chuffed to find that there are just 29 of the Lux version in the UK so it's a rare car too.
Can't wait to pick it up tomorrow and can now spend the extra £5-6k it would have cost to buy a 200 on something else instead. Or I may be able to afford to keep existing the Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo as a weekend car? Hmmmmm????
Happy days )

Well i specced up a new 200 with all the options i wanted (Recaros, Speedlines, Cup spoiler, Cup Suspension) for 20k.
Then i found some 2 year old ones with the right spec for 13k.
Then i put a deposit on a '57 plate 197 Cup with Recaros & 34k miles for 6.5k.
Is the 200 6 grand better than the 197? Only time will tell, but i very much doubt it.

Modern hot hatches are so competent, especially the RS models, that I can't imagine there is much difference between a 197 and a 200. Especially not on the roads.
The 197s are a lot nicer to look at as well. The 200s are good, but that silly front wing is a bit of a gimmick. The 197s were fairly subtle for what they were, now the 200s have the big exhaust pipes and the alloys aren't as nice either.
I'd still love to have either, though!
