Hi everyone

Have a 1.5 dci Kangoo (53 plate) the alternator clutch pulley is loose and rattling. I know this is a recognised problem but what I need advice on is whether I am safe to move the car to the local garage about 3 miles away without causing any further damage. When the motor is running there is smoke coming from the alternator area this is either the pulley belt rubbing or the alternator itself.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

don't move it an inch or even start it as if the belt comes off you'll have a bill that will make you eyes water!

You could cut the belt off and drive it there. They are a pain in the arse, I assume it'll have done around the 70K mark. The bad news is that if the garage wont go to the very big hassle of fitting a new pulley £30, a new alternator is around £350 plus VAT. You might want them to change the tensioner at the same time, they're about £60 including the belt.

Thanks for your responses - very helpful. I have a mobile mechanic coming out tomorrow with the 2 options - replace the pulley or the alternator + pulley ranges from £100 to £300 all in. We will make the call depending on what needs doing............

I paid £30 from Renault for a new pulley, the problem is the old one wont come off without a fight, in the end I had to take the alternator to somewhere that had the tools but I think they ended up cutting the old pulley off.

This gets more complicated - I think the pulley needs a special tool to remove it. The problem is that our car is converted for disabled use and I need it for my son asap, so would be happy to pay for the new alternator if that's what is required to get it back on the road.

Thanks for all your help

Sort of yes, we broke three of them before we took it somewhere else to let them break their special tools. Don't forget to consider doing the belt tensioner at the same time, how many miles has it done?
