The engine is only about the only bit that will still be working hehe

Do these still have the headlight bulbs that require taking off the wheel and half the front suspension to get at to replace?

On a 55 plate model yes...

The new shape (09+) don't have this problem anmore, the headlights come out on rails and are easily changed.

Most ph1 cars - upto 06 plate - will be 1.9 Dci 120 anyway. The ph2 cars only look slightly different (front grille, rear lights) but are miles better electrically. Only issue is, the later cars with the 1.9 Dci 130 engine have a FAP filter, meaning 9k/12m service intervals and expensive oil.

I would honestly go for a 1.5 Dci 106 with cheaper road tax, better economy, & lower insurance. It will remap to approx 125-130 bhp if you are desperate. The best diesel engine in this model by far, however, is the 2.0 Dci 150 found mainly in a Megane GT - this is the Renault/Nissan Alliance engine that is chain drive.

Look on eBay to see just how many of these cars are for sale with engine problems.

I've got one, no problems really other than wear and tear.

Only essential thing is to check the window seals, any sign of water in door pockets/footwell walk away.

You don't need to take the wheel off unless you're a total moron, changing the bulbs is not as easy as it should be but its not hard.

If you buy the "sport tourer" bear in mind the spoiler cracks and/or comes off after prolonged running above 110mph, am on my third one (all on Autobahn runs obviously)

Get between 35 (town), 50 (normal driving) and 65 (economy run) mpg.

Otherwise just a comfortable, economical, spacious little car.

Dash failure is very common, Renault will replace them for £100 but you lose the mileage. I wouldn't let our car go near a Renault dealer so had ours repaired. Probably a mistake as it has been repaired 3 times now and has gone wrong again.

There was a recall on the electronic handbrake a while ago, not sure if this applies to all models.

Our car has 70K on the clock and runs like a bag of spanners when cold. When it goes bang it will be straight on eBay as spares or repairs.

In 4 years and 36K miles we have had a washer pump fail (easy repair) and a suspension top strut bearing go. The CD player makes a horrible noise and I know the window regulator on the passenger side has been replaced. To start the car you have to have your foot on either the brake or the clutch. The wire on the clutch switch has snapped twice in the time we have had it.

Despite being garaged and pampered it feels way older than the mileage suggests. The size is just right for us, just a shame the build quality is so bad.

As has been stated above, 130 has the Particle Filter, something else to go wrong. If the car is used for short journies I would go out of my way to avoid this.

The OP has posted about a Megane. You clearly have a Scenic, as Meganes don't have a digital dash or electronic handbrake rolleyes

All Megane and Scenic II's must be started with either clutch/brake pedal depressed - its a safety feature, so a child cannot start the engine by just pressing the 'start stop' button.

Many manufactures now employ particulate filters, and they need clearing following continued local driving. The Renault system gives you an orange warning light to highlight if it needs clearing (15 min drive at 50-60mph), and if you choose to ignore it, then the light will eventually change to red, which means it will need clearing by a dealer asap. Absolutely, this is 'something else to go wrong' - but surely you would ignore recommended maintenance by any car manufacturer at your peril, such as not changing a cambelt at the appropriate time/mileage?

We have a silver 5 door 1.9 120dci with 60K. Had it about a year, and it's been faultless. Just going in for a service and cam belt change tomorrow.
Good balance of mpg and power.
Thinking of upgrading for a 150dci as I find the seats a bit soft for long journeys. Going to look at one tomorrow!

Bought one about 6 months ago, a 1.9 litre dci 130bhp from ´05 pre-facelift with 70k miles n the clock. So far so good. Engine is smooth and torquey with just regular maintenance, I also did a remap which has been good for 20 extra bhp and weighing just 1200 kilos the car flies.

All in all, really happy with this little value-for-money daily commuter
