Thinking about going back to my Saxo driving days and finding a low mileage VTS for around £2k, BUT I have also been having a bit of a hankering for an S2 106 Rallye. Have seem a few with JP4 (16v) engine conversions so performance similar/better, and they do have a bit more of a Motorsport feel to them.

Anyone driven both? What are the pros and cons of each?

Probably going to be a higher mileage Rallye at the same money I guess.

Cheers,

James

Possible, but seem to be a lot more money and generally higher mileages. You asking for a reason? wink

The 106 is very bare and doesn't have much in creature comforts.

VTS is more of an everyday car and would be a lot better to live with.

The 106 is more of a drivers car but if it was me and it's an everyday car I'd be going for the comfier, quieter VTS.

LOL no afraid not , just thought i'd throw it into the mix .
I've run mine daily for nearly 9 years with no major problems .
Rallye's seem to hold their money better even after being 16v'd .

I've got an S2 rallye that I used daily for around 3 years, including long hacks down to le mans/ scotland etc with no problems. Obv never going to be as comfy as the VTS/gti but not unbearable, and just as quick as the VTS on the standard engine. You will be paying a premium for the rallye badges tho so really depends how much you want one, will you be using it as a daily or a toy?

Can't say I've ever driven a VTS so can't comment on how they both feel to drive, but the rallye won't disappoint smile

I like the idea of a Rallye, but thinking now that a 106 GTI may be the way to go, particularly as insurance is 25% less than a VTS. Kind of fancy the slightly improved comfort over the Rallye, though suspect residuals won't be as good.

I have a S1 Rallye with a VTS engine. Comfort wise there isn't a massive difference between a Rallye and VTS/GTI. Other than electric windows and a bit more road noise, the seats are no less comfortable and the ride is the same.

The Rallyes cost more but also will hold their value better, although I don't think a good VTS or GTI will loose much more now either.

My S1 is now on classic car insurance so it's under £400 a year. Newer 106s and Saxos won't qualify for that yet.

A standard S2 Rallye is quite a bit slower than a VTS. A 16v Rallye will be quicker- mine is slightly quicker than a friends cammed VTS, both stripped with similar intake and exhaust modifications.

I've always fancied a standard, square headlight VTS if I could pick one up for less than my 106 is worth but there's really not a lot of difference between any of the 106/Saxo range. Buy on condition above anything else because they are showing their age, rust is becoming an issue and the handling does suffer as they suspension and bushes get tired.
