I'm looking after my daughters car (as per title) whilst she is away travelling abroad, her car is now sorn so i've been starting it at regular intervals and it has been fine until today. Started fine and then i noticed the red STOP light with the battery symbol illuminated. I have a multimeter so checked to see if it was charging which it wasn't, why should it just pack up? Is there anything like spraying the unit with WD40 or brake cleaner to get it running again? The battery has since gone flat, is it now a case of new alternator time and if so it looks difficult to get on to. Is it a difficult DIY job?

are you checking the voltage at the battery or directly from the back of the alternator?just to make sure the wiring is ok. i'd also check the big earth on the side of the gearbox. The alternator itself isn't a big job but requires removal of the engine mounting to remove the bolts.i think i'd try to get the unit recon'ed

I find the replacement of the auxillary belts very fiddly on the K4J's on Clio's. It's a fairly long belt and gaining access to the tentioner isn't as easy as most cars.
