Really frustrating intermittent one here on an 03 Laguna. Mostly drives fine, but occasionally just dies with no warning; usually accompanied by the Service and Airbag (symbol) lights illuminating (or, occasionally, the ABS light). Sometimes the car doesn't actually die but hesitates then the same light come on but it continues to run.

Fault codes seem to be recorded indicating the crank sensor but this has been renewed (I gather it will throw the same code when the engine dies). A chafed loom (the one over the gearbox, roughly beneath the battery/ECU area, has also been identified and repaired.

Needless to say, whenever it dies, it restarts pretty much immediately so actually finding what's failed/failing is a challenge.... ideas welcome

Do you adjust your seat much? The looms are pretty french. try disconnecting and reconnecting the plugs under the drivers seat and running a reset.

Thanks, that's interesting... is there any danger of setting anything off (have always been wary of airbag/pretensioner electronics) and how is a 'reset' run (assume you mean the ECU)?

There's no danger of the airbag going off (well people say it can happen but it's never happened me) but if there's any doubt in your mind, disconnect the battery and leave it for 15 minutes to let the capacitors in the system dissapate before doing any work.

As it's a Renault, there's going to be a lot of fault codes stored in the ECU already lol. Best thing you can do is to clear them, drive it for a while and see what new codes appear.

I've worked at a few Lagunas and the most common fault I've found in the airbag system is is drivers side airbag, resistance too high. Can't remember the specific code off hand but that's the meaning of it. Usually means a problem with the connectors under the drivers seat.

If you don't have a scanner, I'd recommend investing in an Autel EU702. I will happily send you an update for it containing the Renault software.

Thanks for the further info and the offer; both appreciated. What I'm left wondering however, is there scope for an airbag issue of this nature to result in the engine stumbling/dying? I guess so if the electronics are configured to kill the motor in the event of an airbag deployment but I don't know whether it's that 'clever'. I had assumed there was an issue with the engine electronics that was just triggering the airbag light in the way that a bad earth on a chassis or whatever will often cause odd issues on 'other' circuits...
