As the title says really - I'm considering one as a toy come weekend car but also need a little space for kids in emergencies - anyone got the good, bad and ugly?? Reviews seem OK.

Cheers

Window regulators will be the biggest pain though there is a 7 year contribution on them from Renault,
I loved mine but it got stolen, unfortunately :0(

I had my f1 r26 230 for just over a year. Performance is staggering, and can out perform most cars out there, but I didn't really get on with mine for the following reasons:

1) Consumption, mid 20's mpg most of the time, dropping to very low 20's if enthusiastic, depressing given todays fuel prices.
2) Boring. Probably full credit to the car, but it did everything, little driver input or feedback meant it didn't give me a buzz. Granted I never did get to track it, but many an enthusiastic B road journey.
3) Maintenance costs were through the roof, the last service before I got shot was just under 2k. That was for discs/pads/tyres refresh and a general service.
4) Depreciation. Possibly a good thing if you're in the market to buy, but mine almost halved in value in just over a year.

On the pus side

1) Great family car when you need it to be, lots of space, quiet, comfy, toys.
2) Brilliant exhaust note. Drop the back seats and remove boot noise insulation for dramatic 'jet' effect, very addictive noise.
3) Staggering performance and balance given the size and weight of the car, you really do have to push it very hard for it to loose any grip, seemed to defy physics at times.

Thanks for the replies, I bought one - a blue F1 230 - so far so good - I had a scooby before this and I have to say its far more refined than that, and also not much in it performance wise (mine was a WRX) -
Still very new to it but so far so good - also, this will definately be getting tracked, the 306 Gti-6 is getting a little tired now, and looking forward to having a little proper blast where speed guns are not allowed!!!

Cheers again.

Good stuff, I had one for a while great cars.

Really worth considering a remap, i had a rs tuning map on mine and it transformed the car.

Yep, so far so good, handling is tremendous - i think during mid to late summer i'll maybe look into a good re-map and maybe a different exhaust, although the sound is pretty good from the standard. I'll post questions nearer the time for any rec's regarding these options.
Thanks again for the replies.

I have had mine for over 3 years - only fault is the passenger window regulator has gone.

I have an RS Tuning remap with a dynod 266bhp and 280lb/ft - a real supercar slayer at times and fantastic handling.

I bought it at 18 months old for £12k so the 3 years would have cost around £4k in depreciation - pretty good me thinks.

I have now had mine for over 3 years and still really like it. I was initially disappointed with it as it was so easy to drive at speed you did not get a thrill, but slowly began to enjoy it as it is a great all-rounder. Quiet and comfortable on a long trip, happy to plod in traffic then rather quick when you want it to be.

I have found servicing really cheap and that is through a RenaultSport Centre in Bristol. The only things that seem expensive are tyres and brake pads, which annoyingly have very little material on them so do not last very long and unless you want to have a disaster you need to spend £34 on pad retaining pins. If you do not replace them they can rust in place and have to be drilled out.

Give me a shout as that is around the time I could be selling mine. It is black with the Lux pack, leather seats, Xenon headlights etc, RenaultSport Titanium exhaust. Also has the RSTunning remap but leave it standard as my fun car is a potent Westfield so the Megane in standard tune is more than adequate for daily use. smile

I have owned a Megane R26 for about 18 months and it is a fantastic car. It was a replacement for a Clio 182 (which was also great) and feels like a suitable progression from a fairly "raw" car to, an almost, civilised one.

So far I have only had some minor problems with the car after both CV Boot clips on front wheels needed replacing (about £20.00 including labour each). Other than that it has been normal wear and tear.

I have heard and read some criticism of the car's interior but, to be honest, I think it is perfectly reasonable. My car is now nearly five years old and has little over 28,000 miles under its wheels but has still not developed any squeaks or rattles (unlike my previous clio). The recaros are brilliant if a little high and the standard equipment is very good. I would recommend seeking out the lux pack versions if you can as these have full leather and a slightly different interior which gives the car a little uplift in the comfort stakes.

Without question the best parts of the car are the handling and the turbo whistle (made much better by dropping the rear seats and NOT going full throttle). The handling is instantly impressive for anyone that has never driven a car with a limited slip diff before. I am still surprised how you can actually tighten the car's line mid corner without really shaving any speed.

One thing that surprises most people is how civilised the car is at most speeds. It does have hard suspension and that may be a bit tiresome for some but is worth it for the excellent handling. I currently do a 50 mile commute every day and am more than happy with the way the car munches away at the miles.

For those that may be considering purchasing one be warned that it (like most other 2.0+ turbos) likes a drink. On a long run 30-34mpg is possible but my daily/weekly average remains fairly constant at 27.5mpg.

Also if you are looking at buying a liquid yellow one (as I did) then bear in mind that people will attach themselves to your rear bumper a lot. Also, other people will often take an instant dislike to you on the road and presume you are doing something wrong, even when simply trundling along. However, for me the colour more than makes up for it and, especially when clean, the car looks like it simply wants to be driven.

At present, I do not know when or if I will sell this car. What I do know is it will be very hard to replace because it really is an excellent all-rounder.

Overall it is a great car and comes highly recommended.

Quick update re the R26 - Did my first track day in it on Wedsnesday (28th mar) at Cadwell and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it, such an easy car to drive quickly and smooth that it almost gave me the feeling that I had some talent!!!??? I went with a friend who took his R32 Golf (mk 5) and we both had the intention to take it steady(ish) and not treat the day or car the same as we do the 306 we have, but I got so into it, with the R26 being so much more competitive than i'm used to, that I had a few 'moments' shall we call them.

Tyre wear not too bad, surprisingly the O/S rear took the most hammer?? and no brake fade suffered although I was light on these.

Tremendous all in all

Thread resurrection but just wondered what long term mpg people are getting out of their R26s? Changing from my impreza this year and these look fairly tempting.

I got mid 20s - circa 25/26 mpg in mine. A general mix of driving types with a slightly heavy foot from time to time.

Certainly sounds no better than my Impreza so will cross that one of the shortlist, thanks!
