A couple of annoying glitch's have now started on my wife’s 52 plate Clio Sport:-

- The centre/upper display, which normally shows the radio station/CD display, clock/time and outside temperature, is now pretty much un-readable, as the back-lit display is extremely dim. Occasionally you can read part of the display, but this very much depends on the outside sun direction, but generally you can't see or read a thing ?.

- When travelling along, occasionally the speddo reading will drop to zero, rev counter etc all continue to read as normal, then after 30 seconds or so, the speddo will start to read the speed as normal/expected. There is no pattern to the speddo dropping to zero - it may happen several times over the course of a journey, or it may not happen at all.

Anyone got any ideas as to the problem/problems I have here, and if so, how do I access the problem areas to rectify the fault - I'm guessing I may have to get behind the dash/bulkhead, but after having a brief look around, that doesn’t look as though it'll be easy to access ?.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The display being dimly lit is most likely just a bulb issue, this can be accessed by removing the upper half of the dash.

This is done by only a handful of screws, don't forget to disconnect the battery first.
2x 1 each end of the dash, visible only when the doors are open
3x in the air vent that is in front of the window
3x (i think it's 3 maybe 2) behind the silver dash strip above the glove box, this strip just pulls off, open the glovebox for better access
1x behind the silver dash strip on the drivers side, again this just pulls off, might need to use a flat headed screw driver just to get it started
once these are all removed the dash just pulls off then you can undo a further 2x screws i believe to remove the centre display itself.
If the dash holds on around the passenger airbag pull it away from the windscreen and give that area a thump downwards.

The second problem is most likely to be a faulty speedo sensor, I've got a cup which uses a mechanical speedo so i'm not 100% on the location of yours.
I think early ph2 172's had a sensor in the gearbox, these are reasonably priced from Renault, about £20 i think. Simple to change too, just have to remove the airbox.

Change the bulbs in the back of the display, if that doesn't sort it, the display unit is faulty, seen it happen a couple of times.

As for the speedo, pull the plug off the speed sensor on the gearbox (located near the diff), spray some WD40 into it and reconnect it. If that doesn't cure it, you'll need a new speedo sensor. A tenner will pick one up in a scrappy.

Gareth, James,
Many thanks for you help, that sounds more than do-able, even for a non-techy like myself. Thanks again, most helpful.

Ok, I've sorted the dim display - thanks guys. If anyone is interested, I couldn't actually remove the dash all seemed very tight, but got all the screws removed as suggested, and managed to lift the upper dash upwards - and the display itself was held in place by 2 x push fixings to the upper-rear of the display unit, and 2 x push fixings to the lower-front of the display unit. Once I'd managed to release these, I managed to pull the display unit forwards enough to get my fingers behind the display unit to release the bulb-holders and replace the bulbs. Getting the dash back was a bit testing, as it tends to get snagged on the passenger air-bag unit, and therefore you have to be reasonably careful when trying to persuade it back into place. After much swearing, I managed to pull the dash slightly towards me horizontally and then more by luck, the dash dropped very slightly, and it all fell into location, and then it was just a case or doing all the fixings back up.
