I have just changed the alternater on my Peugeot partner 2.0 ltr HDi and when I push the belt tensioner back I can not get the belt to go on to the power steering pump pulley as there is not enough slack in the belt.

Should there be plenty of slack in the belt when the tensioner is pushed forward so the belt easily goes on the pulley or do you have to force it on.

Shouldn't have trouble slipping the belt back on with the tensioner retracted all the way. Is it a replacement belt too?

No it's the same belt so it could be the tensioner is not going all the way back.

Is it the type where you insert a square drive and just lever back against a spring ? and is it nice and "springy".Also the other idler pulley is eccentric, undo the center bolt and that will give you more slack on the belt.Fit the belt, let go of the spring tensioner, move the other pulley with a key to tighten the belt more and fully tighten the bolt.

I have the pulley setup the same as the top left diagram with the spring loaded tensioner and when tensioner is fully forward I still need about half inch to get it on to the power steering pulley.

That`s the one I expected. The pulley I`m talking about is on the left of the alternator, slacken the center bolt and it will "swing".Have a close look at it and find the hole to insert the allen key to adjust it after fitting the belt.As you will realise its difficult to get at,you have to hold the key with one hand and tighten the bolt with the other.

I shall look at that tomorrow and see how I get on, the thing that puzzles me is the belt came off easily by just pushing the tensioner forward.

Now you have got me thinking ?? On that model the alternator bolts solid to the block,is it exactly the same as the old one, body size etc AND check the diameter of its pulley.I`ve seen alternators with different size pulleys.
