Does anyone have any idea of the cost of replacing a power steering pump on a 54 Renault Megane 1.6 petrol?

My brother in law has been told that it's a major job and that the dash needs to be reomoved to do it, in addition to this you need a specific number of the pump and that you have to remove the dash to get at this number too.

He's been quoted £500 but he couldn't remember if this was labour only or included the pump.

Any adivce would be appreciated.

not sure on the costs of the steering column/electric motor for the power steering but it is expensive.the dash does not need to come out completely just the drivers side bottom half. What ever you do, do not buy a second hand unit as these will not work as they are coded to each individual car and are not interchangeable. It needs to be a new unit then configured using the renault clip tool. Hope this helps.

Mechanically they're not too difficult to do. But Renaults book time will no doubt quote for removal of the entire dash board.

jim is right aswell, make sure you get a brand new one. Maybe worth checking out a Renault specialist too (not a main dealer).

Thanks for the advice.

Ouch, £546 for a new pump from Euro Car Parts! Why does the pump have to be coded to each individual car? Is it a dealer only job?

have to programme the steering angle sensor, the type of vehicle, vin number and i think there is one more configuration, been a while sine i did one on a megane (im a renault master tech), any garage that has the correct renault diagnostic (clip) can do it, but i'd recommend a dealer.

Thanks. Is there no workaround with a used pump?

I know for a fact that they can't afford to spend the kind of money that this seems to be commanding.

Is it possible to edit a thread title? I just realised how pathetic my title was!
