The good old pug 206 GLX (1.6L 2000 reg) has been in for a service and winter tyres but failed the MOT.

Can anyone here estimate for me the going rate to supply the parts and fix the following:

2 x front discs + pads
2 x constant velocity joint gaiter (nearside and offside both have problems).

Looks like around £155 (inc) for the parts on eurospares.

Many thanks.

I'd say expect 2 - 3 hours labour to be charged on top of the parts cost at worst

Why has it failed on front brakes?

Ah, the old "discs and pads" ruse.

I will GUARANTEE you that your discs do not need changing.

It's actually very difficult to legally fail cars on discs and pads.

What does the failure sheet say?

He didn't say it failed on discs and pads although those prices look quite high to me. I'd expect to pay no more than £50 for the discs and pads plus £20ish for the gaiters.

Many thanks for your replies. This forum is the best!

Failure sheet only relating to the two CV joints, everything else was a pass apart from pads.

Mechanic did not fail MOT on the discs *and* pads, it failed just on the pads. The discs are down to 11mm and they do not fit pads to discs less than 11mm. Makes sense to do the pads and discs at same time etc.

Well O/E (aka OEM) limits you to ATE, Bosch or Bendix brands on a 206, which ECP are pretty much the only suppliers for.

O/E equivilents could be anyone. There are 4 or 5 brake friction component manufacturers worldwide, and more than 500 brands. Printer ink is pretty cheap when buying in bulk, do the maths ;(

So for £50, easy! You can get them on eBay for that (and I've said that without looking, assuming it's running 247mm vented discs with ATE calipers).

Carl said that the discs are down to 11mm thickness.

If that's on ventilated discs, they definately need replacing wink

Non-vented are often quite a lot cheaper than vented conponents.

Haha good spot! That'll teach me for scan reading. I thought I'd read it was a 1.6, and I've never known a 206 1600 to have solid discs. 1.1, some 1.4 and 1.9D models maybe.
Solid are usually cheaper, but not as often as you might think. The number of applications to one part number normally dictates how cheap they are these days.
