Hi guys.

Ive picked up a mint, 45,000 mile, 3 door (non sunroof) 1.1 205 in white. I want to do the 2.0 16v GTI-6/VTS conversion so I have a few questions;

I'm going to use a 1.6 GTI gearbox, brakes and subframe (with ARB, steering rack and wishbones) but what hubs and driveshafts should I use? Could I use the 1.1 units?

Do I need a bigger radiator (GTI?) or will the 1.1 radiator be ok?

Lastly dose anyone know a place in the South West that has carried out this conversion? Any idea on cost if I were to source all the parts myself?

Bit of a mission!
Get Gti hubs in fact Gti front and rear ends.
Fuel pump will need changing.
a Gti would be a better basis.

Cost.....depends what you want.

Contact miles on 205gti drivers forum, he's based in the new forest.

I'm not sure it's best to start off with a GTI tbh, how much would a very tidy one cost? £2,000+?
The 1.1 cost £600, the front subframe would have to come out anyway to renew the bushes, brakes, etc. I can build it up inside and swap the whole unit over, same with the rear end. Your correct about the fuel pump, I remember now that it's best to swap the tanks over.

Any ideas on the cooling and driveshafts?

As to cost, I'm just after a rough idea for someone to drop the engine in and having it running and connected to the dash.

1.6 shafts will fit into the 1.1 hubs which will allow you to use 1.9 or gti6 brakes, that's what I run on mine.
If you have everything ready to fit miles at pug racing will do you a good price. Bearing in mind you will need updated engine mounts, modified exhaust mani, new clutch, modified down pipe, cam belt and pump, Plus any extras like silicone hoses, lightened flywheel etc, it soon adds up

Quality cheap GTI's ripe for conversions are out there.

I bought my current GTI back in 2008 for £400. It hadn't run for 18 months but was to be the basis of a re shell as it was low mileage and sound.

The car I was re shelling cost me £2500 in 2001.

I don't really see the big problem with using a 1.1, the only extra work will be the fuel tank and dials (they would have to come out anyway). The brakes, drivetrain and suspension would come out anyway regardless of what 205 it is. Like I said it cost me £600 with 12 months test and tax, so I can use it up until the conversion.

Anyway back on topic.... I might use the Xsara VTS gearbox, if I do what driveshafts can be used?
With the brakes, I was under the impression (out of 1.6 or 1.9) that it was best to use 1.6 as they are alloy and don't have to fit onto a yoke?? So 1.6 calipers with 1.9 discs using the 1.1 hub?

i have the xsara box on mine using the standard 1.6 shafts into base model hubs with gti6 brakes.
you cannot use 1.6 brakes on anything other than 1.6 hubs as the offset is different hense why i have changed mine to base model hubs. you would need to use either 1.9 or gti6 brakes on a 1.1 or 1.9 hub.
you really need to get into the 205gtidrivers forum as all this info is on there.

Personally i'd swap the 1.1 for a 1.6 16v tu out a saxo vts or 106 gti much easier swap as theres no messing around changing the subframe etc

Rubbish! that engine is no newer, the xu10j4rs was in a car for the first timr in early 1997....

Theres no reason not to do it, its been done one million times and is extremely common, and you get a car with a 0-60 akin with a brand new golf gti. And the torque in a car that size is immense

In terms of overall straight-line performance, the TU5J4 in a 205 would be little or no better than fitting a healthy 1.6 or 1.9 8v XU. The XU10J4RS is a significant upgrade over the standard 8v engines, and would see you near 200bhp/ton. For the record, that's Impreza STI territory, so it's well worth the effort smile
