Morning Chums

My mate has just bought a 54 plate Clio 182, he got it thoroughly serviced: cambelt, tensioners, aux belt, water pump, oil, all filters, plugs and leads etc etc

When we collected it it sounded a little "cammy" and we thought a good service would sort it out, but it still sounds the same frown

Is there any point in adding Slick 50 to the engine or not? Is this a good idea or a bad one?

Cheers
Dave

Don't bother. By "cammy" do you mean the lumpy idle you get with aggresive cams or do you really mean "tappy"?

A lumpy idle is perfectly normal.

It'll be the dephaser.

No it`s dedfinitely a "tappy" noise like you used to get on old fords ie lifters/followers

Check it's been timed up properly with the correct tools. Do it before driving it any more.

Sounding very likely to be the dephaser, if it is it will be noticeable that the noise is coming from the far left of the engine as you look at it.

Yep it would appear to be the dephaser. Bloody typical just had the cambelt, aux` belt water pump all changed on Monday, now it`s all got to come off again banghead
Is there any danger in just running until it gets louder or does it need doing as a matter of urgency?

My 172 (and those of friends) always sounded a bit tappety on a hot idle. Nothing to worry about I thought confused

Hi, I live in Bedfordshire, if you want me to have a listen just give me a shout. If the timing was out, it would've bent valves already as Renault tolerances are pathetically small. I've also never heard of the dephaser making it sound cammy/tappy as typically the F4R style inlet pulley's are far more robust than the turds they stuck onto the K4M's.

The engines do sound tappy...especially when warm!

I had my cambelt replaced recently at Birchdown Renaultsport Specialists in Malpas. When they came to fit the new belt they realised the dephaser pulley was so badly worn that they couldn't set the timing properly unless the dephaser pulley was replaced. Prior to this the engine had a whirring noise which sounded like a noisy alternator and it was very lumpy until the engine warmed up. Since the belt and pulley have been done the engine is really sharp on the throttle and so much quieter.I've heard a few of these cars that have this whirring noise and now I know what's causing it I'd recommend to anyone who has a noisy F4-R engine to get the dephaser pulley changed.

My 182 has a noisy dephaser pulley, but from what i've read it doesn't actually matter, so i haven't been too worried about it. Do they definitely need changing when they become noisy?

they can't cause any terminal damage but performance will be reduced.i would recommend changing it, they're not too bad to do really, i have done a couple for friends on their drives but you do ned the correct locking tools and a spare morning..ish

I feel your pain. I had both belts done 18 months ago but not the dephaser as it was fine. Now it's gone I had to pay for the whole lot again...

Difference in performance with the new one is amazing!

Isn't the dephaser part of the whole cambelt job kit anyway? I've read on ClioSport that the two should normally be done together as 'you might as well' due to the convenience of having gotten to the components. And at that point, 'you might as well' do the aux belt every other time the cambelt is done, I think.

Bloody intervals.

It`s sods law, but we just didn`t know anything about it at the time, literally bought the car and knew the cambelt needed doing so put it straight in to be done, did a bit of research and made sure the water pump, aux belt and full tensioner kit were all done at the same time, but typically didn`t hear a thing about the dephaser pulley until it had all been done banghead

I think he`ll just have to suck it up and do it, been quoted £300ish

Unfortunately its not part of the cambelt kit. The dephaser pulley is approx £170 more plus you should replace some seals. That added another 40 odd quid to the bill.

It seems that many of the f4r engines are now developing this problem. My car was just under 70k when the first belt was changed. The dephaser went at 110. You know its gone as once the engine warms up it will sound like a tractor at idle. Check YouTube.

Seems to be the fashion on cs to get it done wink

It seems like most of the comments on CS revolve around fashion rather than knowledge or common sense.
If you believe most the stuff on there, every 1*2 needs new belts, dephaser, balljoints, engine mounts etc. As well as that you should only get you belts done by one of the site sponsors as no-one else in the country appears to be able to replace a cam belt properly banghead
