Went out a drive to pick up some food tonight and on the way back the Cup started making this whirring/light knocking/grinding noise on the over-run in all gears. It doesn't do it when there's any load in the gearbox and when in neutral...

Any ideas? At first I thought it was a CV joint but the lack of noise when it's in neutral makes me think it's something more terminal frown

Sounds expensive.

On my 172 it was the engine mounts that was causing this problem

Was it any specific engine mount? I just went out and had a look at the car and the top mount does seem to be quite loose (like the actual rubber could move and touch the housing with even a shove).

The noise is definitely road-speed related and doesn't happen when there's any load...so is it something rubbing on the back of the block or the sump? Like a drive-shaft?

I also have this problem with my 172 cup, although it seems to come and go?

If there is that much movement in the engine mountings then definitely get them changed and preferably for some uprated ones. The engine is probably transmitting noise through the chassis when the mountings move to allow the engine to touch the body.

Agree slight oil leak can degrade the engine mouting rubbers causing slight alignment issues. K-tec do uprated ones for top and bottom.
