Does anyone know what this might be as took a real tidy 205 mi16 out for a test drive today and was on the final bit of the test drive which was going very well and I was preparing to be the new owner. Coming down a dual carriage way and hit 80 when I got the mother of vibrations through the car.

Slowed down and it went thinking it may be wheel balancing I then accelerated right through to 100 and the vibration started at 80 and was getting worse!!

I like this car but want to know what the problem might be!!???

Wheel tracking and alignment can easily go out over time, just one of them things as you hit bumps and pot holes. Symptoms sound like it could be that, so before you buy the car ask the current owner to see some service history or ask him the last time he had the front tyres changed/looked at and see whether it was professionally done, and if it doesn't have any mention of a new set of tyres on the front then chances are it's the alignment It's usually something which is easily overlooked by the non-vigilant owner and is about a £40 fix

Distorted tyre?

Distorted tyre would occur if the car was sat for a long period (flat spot), no?

I don't think that was the case, its driven regularly. (I was present on the test drive yesterday)

Buckled wheel possibly? Would that not be felt at all speeds?

What do people think to it being transmission or rear beam related? The car was obviously under load when the vibration occurred. I hasten to add I am no expert and just putting that out there for discussion rather than saying a probable cause!

Tyres distort through old age and heat just as much as from standing. You wouldn't believe how common a problem it is.They go egg shaped rather than a flat spot.
Rear arm wear usually makes them wander rather than vibrate. It could be a driveshaft, they normally make the gearlever shake.
It could be a buckled or badly out of balance wheel.

Could be an inner CV joint that's beginning to fail as well.

This will normally give the symptoms of a shimmy/shake through the whole car that's much worse at speed and under load/acceleration. Usually the vibration will dramatically reduce just by backing off the throttle.

Poor 205 Mi16 conversions where the engine has been tilted to get around the exhaust manifold clearance issues only serves to exasperate the issue, as tilting the engine moves the driveshafts out of line, putting additional strain on them and often significantly reducing their life expectancy.

A problem with the CV joint was suspected too. We tried to test this by taking a sweeping left hand bend and a roundabout at speed (obviously not 80!) to see if loading up the suspension made the vibration come back. It didn't seem to but that's not to say a worn CV is not the culprit.

From our inspection of the car the engine had been tilted and mounted correctly meeting to a bespoke 4-2-1 manifold. So you'd hope it was putting as least strain as possible on the drive train.

An inner joint wouldn't necessarily show up like this. The best way to check is crawl under it and see if there is any lift in the inner joints.

Did the vibrations come through to actually affect the steering, or gear stick? If so then it's most likely to be a CV joint issue which only shows up when it reaches a certain speed and starts to resonate.
If it's the whole car vibrating then maybe either a wishbone bush, engine mount or possibly the bottom of the hub may be ovalled so the wishbone is moving around slightly.

On topic: Got mine back up and running over the weekend and although I still need to fit a new driveshaft it's up for sale so you're welcome to come have a look! smile

The vibration was such that it was hard to tell if it was traveling through gear stick or steering wheel! The whole car was going unfortunately.

it was me driving but John D hoping to be the new owner, easier to write in first person terms rather than "me mate john" (and im a bit more of an animal on test drives( biggrinhehe

Too be honest the car was shaking soo hard that it was impossible to tell where in the car it was coming from, i have had cv joints go on me before and it usuing pulls to the busted side as you put your foot down and this felt a lot worse vibrations than that and didnt pull left or right under acceleration!!

Ah cool. I had (have) something similar on mine, and it looks to be the inner cv resonating. At the end of the day there's only a few things it could be so it's just a matter of elimination.
Are you around this weekend? John may be coming to have a look at mine so you're welcome to pop over? It's not insured so no driving at the mo cry but would be good to say hello anyway!
