I know the opinion here may be somewhat biased but I'm currently looking at a 307 as a reliable daily driver, am I mad or will it provide relatively fault free motoring? I'd be looking at something around a 90,000 - 110,000 miler HDI with a budget of around £2000 - £2500.

Is it a MK1 model or a facelifted MK2 model? The facelifted version had a complete overhaul of its electrics and electrically is a lot more reliable.

The 307 was the first car to have DPFs across all its Diesel range so this is a must check. If the car has been used for long trips at motorway speeds then it should be fine however as with all DPF Diesel's they detest short journeys.

They also have an additive tank which adds additives to the Diesel when re-fuelled which works with the DPF system. This obviosuly need topping up every so often (think its every 60,000 miles in the service booklet) and if left to run dry ignored can cause all sorts of problems. It's usually around £400 to get refilled so checking it has been done is a must.

I had 307 and it was failry reliable. However what made me get rid of in the end was the constant niggling problems. It seemed everytime I got something fixed something else would then go wrong.

My 307 was a complete electrical nightmare. New problems daily. Worst car i've owned. Although a nice place to sit. whilst waiting for the AA.

You have to be extremely lucky with a mark 1. A facelift one will cost you a bit more but you won't spend half as much repairing.

For £2500? With the 1.6 hdi's reputation no thanks.
You could buy 3 or 4 xantia hdi's for that money and get 10 years daily driving out of them.
In fact if its a shed for work you want give me a pm I may have just the thing.

ooops I missed the budget level.
HDi is the best diesel you can buy (BMW excluded) - ive driven dozens of them hard, NEVER had any faults at all on any of them.

IMO for your budget a 306 HDI would be a great buy.
