I know they are not the most PH of cars but SWMBO has one and the dash has started playing up.
The digital readouts are very dim, but when you hit the top of the dashboard one half comes back to life for a while!
Please excuse my ignorance on this.
Are there bulbs that light up the digital readout that can be replaced or might it be a loose connection or two? Or will it need a new unit?
Any suggestions?

Sounds very much to me like it's a lose connection

Quite common for those clusters to fail IIRC. I think its the LCD screen, but could be wrong. Mine's still ok, for now biggrin

See quite a few going used on eBay, which suggests the original may be tricky to repair.

Yes there are bulbs behind the LCD readouts and it could just be one of these that needs replacing. Usually there is a bulb either side so if it's bright one side then gradually gets dimmer then it'll probably be a bulb.

However if it's not a bulb then it could be a faulty dimmer switch if it's an early MK1 model. However the facelifted MK2s had multiplex wiring and is very difficult to correct once a fault develops.
