Pottering along a very busy M3 this morning in the outside lane when BANG, "st, can't see anything" bonnet over the windscreen.

Managed to pull over to the hard shoulder and pull the bonnet sort of back into place and zip tie it up.

Here is the damage:

Garage says new skin on the roof, new windscreen and new bonnet so it's going to be expensive frown

You were very lucky and handled the car well.

Did you not know the bonnet was open ans presumably the safety lock was failing?

No light on the dash to show it was open and I washed it last night and it looked fully shut. I had the windscreen replaced yesterday and it is a big coincidence that thus happened today...

Sorry to hear this. The bonnet will NOT have been shut correctly the last time it was opened. When was the car MOT'd? as they should have carried out a check on the catch, who does the servicing as it should be lubricated as part of the svc schedule.

The mot was done in mar and I always check the catch and put some wd40 on it when I open the bonnet.

Renault will be able to confirm when a letter was sent to you. When was the last time the car was in a Renault dealer? They inspect/ replace them on all Clio's that go into them.

I take it to an independent not a main dealer. Last service was probably before summer.

I would speak to the indipendant to find out if they check the catch (I bet they say they do but probably don't)

The problem occurs when the main catch corrodes and sticks in the open position leaving only the secondary catch engaged. The only sure fire way to ensure both are engaged is to yank the bonnet updwards after closing it. Unfortunately Renault have been found not to be at fault for this as it is considered a maintenance issue.

they would have opened the bonnet to fit your new screen i think id call the windscreen company and have a chat. if they opened bonnet its there fault and if they didnt open bonnet how did they fit the screen . also check the front of the headlining for damage i recently had a screen replaced in my 182 and they left the headlining in a terible state

Only if the car was originally supplied by a Renault dealer. Glad the O/P is OK, could have been a much worse outcome.

This.

They didn't shut your bonnet properly.

Twice they've left my bonnet unlatched after replacing windscreens.

They will, of course, deny this - checklist ticked, technicians fully trained etc etc....

I have spoken to them and they accepted liability pretty much straight away. I got 2 quotes and their regional manager has been around to look at the car and as the catch was not damaged or faulty he was extremely apologetic and I guess they realise that it could have been a lot worse.

I had a hire car by mid Friday afternoon and I have to say that the customer service people I have been dealing with have been great.

Thanks, looking back at it I am amazed that it wasn't much worse as a packed M3 isn't something I enjoy driving on when I can see out of the front windscreen never mind when I can't...

This happened to my missus, doing 70 on the A1, very lucky she managed to control it to a stop. Bits of broken windscreen in her face and hair, but other than that very lucky.

Does anyone know what the recall procedure was for older, many owner cars that were technically imports as I believe my 172 was originally sourced from Motorpoint in Derby? Renault do not recogise the number plate on their system so I'm not sure if mine has been replaced. I suppose they might know from the chassis number??
