A mate has asked me to do a cam belt and a clutch on his 182. Rather than do a clutch, and then a cam belt separately, I thought it would be easier to take the complete engine and gearbox out. I have good workshop facilities with a wheel free hoist and a block and tackle, so no problems there.

I would prefer to drop the engine and box out underneath lifting the car on the hoist, anyone know if this is possible?

Also, while the engine and box are out, is there anything else I should replace apart from:-

Cam and Auxiliary belts
Clutch complete
Water Pump
Clutch cable

You'll need the renault locking tools to do the cambelt and there pretty pricey. Please don't attempt to do it without them. Also if your going by autodata it's wrong.

I don't mean to put a downer on the idea but many people have had their engine miss timed.

Yep, as with any engine it's important to get the timing right... I have acsess to the tools and 40 years experience so I hope it will go ok.

Just never taken one of these engines out before and trying to glen experience from anyone who has.

Has it had the dephaser pulley replaced yet? I'd change that as well if it's not been done yet.

I don't mean for this to be insulting and I'm not questioning your experience but these engines are particularly sensitive to the incorrect tools being used (actual Renault tools rather than any other timing tools) and also for it be done correctly (I.e. specifically to Renault instructions). All too often I've heard of garages without the experience doing serious damage because they've done it 'the way they've done it hundreds of times'

Thanks. I have read that as well... I will check it's a genuine tool before I start. I guess it will be easier as I won't be struggling with access with the engine out.

Anyone got any comments regarding the engine coming out from the bottom?

I think I recall seeIng it done by removing it from the bottom. If so then I saw it on Cliosport.net.
It'll cost you a tenner but there is some great advice and guides on there that may well save you a tenner anyway.

If your intention is to replace the dephaser pulley aswell as, then that'll be the costly tool. I can't imagine the cam locking tool or the crank timing pin being that expensive?

With the front subframe removed, extracting the engine isn't too difficult out of the bottom of which has to be removed to do a clutch anyway.

It's not a nice job though to be honest. Even putting the aux. belt on after putting the engine and g/box back in you'll be cursing!

Good luck!

Thanks, I did the Aux belt on my Trophy last year... it took weeks for the skin to grow back on my knuckles!!

I wasn't planning on doing the dephaser pulley, its still quiet...

sshhh don't say that, you know how sods law works!!

For me I'd rather change that at the same time, especially if your mate intends on keeping it for a while.
