My OH's Clio 1.2 (54 reg) has a small amount of mayo under the oil filler cap, also the coolant level has been slowly dropping.

She only does short journeys usually, about 10 miles in the morning, then 10 in the evening.

Is it the sign of the head gasket going?

Self-serviced the car about a month ago, there was only a small trace of mayo back then (size of a pea) so have kept an eye on it, but theres been more appearing.

Its not been loosing oil as far as I can tell from the dipstick.

Any ideas on what to do next?

How long would you recommend?

She has just done 28 miles to a friends, told her to rev it more, but she usually shifts up at 3 1/2k

Try an Italian tune up, take it for a longish drive & thrash the tits off it but I'd say if you're 100% sure that the coolant level is dropping it could well be the early signs of head gasket failure

We had the same problem with my girlfriends car. We took it to a local mechanic to see what he would say. He said not to worry about it, it was only condensation build up in the engine and nothing to worry and start taking her car on longer journey's.We use her car more now and theres been no more gunk on the filler cap.

Common issue due to the remote nature of the cap and pipe, short journeys don't help it just wipe it out with some kitchen roll
